{"id":60174,"date":"2025-07-09T22:22:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T20:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=60174"},"modified":"2026-07-09T00:09:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T22:09:43","slug":"the-spanish-army-tests-multispectral-camouflage-on-its-vamtac-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/07\/09\/the-spanish-army-tests-multispectral-camouflage-on-its-vamtac-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"The Spanish Army tests multispectral camouflage on its VAMTAC vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Camouflage has been used by various armies for many years, but new technologies are reducing its usefulness.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/07\/04\/the-spanish-legion-receives-new-iturri-vmtt-landtrek-and-toyota-land-cruiser-vehicles\/\">The Spanish Legion receives new Iturri VMTT Landtrek and Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/05\/15\/the-new-idv-m250-armored-trucks-of-the-spanish-army-in-the-canary-islands\/\">The new IDV M250 armored trucks of the Spanish Army in the Canary Islands<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, <strong>thermal, infrared, and radar vision systems<\/strong> are making traditional camouflage used by military vehicles less effective. <strong>One of the solutions to this problem is multispectral camouflage nets and covers<\/strong>, which some European armies, such as the German Army, have been using for some time on their Leopard 2 tanks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/11\/27\/cv90-the-nordic-vehicle-that-can-make-a-difference-in-the-harsh-ukrainian-winter\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In 2023 I already talked here about the Barracuda MCS used by the Ukrainian Army<\/a>, a multispectral camouflage system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saab.com\/products\/mcs-mobile-camouflage-system\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">developed by the Swedish company Saab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54644242746_e8acc9c857_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54644242746_8d73fe694b_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On September 2, 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grupoamper.com\/sala-de-prensa\/amper-suministrara-a-las-fuerzas-armadas-espanolas-redes-mimeticas-multiespectrales-2d-por-un-importe-de-95-me\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Spanish company Amper announced the signing of a contract to supply 2D multispectral mimetic networks<\/a> <strong>for the Army, the Air Force, the Navy and the Royal Guard<\/strong>. According to the company, it is a camouflage \"consisting of mesh made with a technology that allows military devices to eliminate their thermal or radar fingerprints.\" The contract covers the period 2024-2028, extendable to 2030, with an amount of 9.5 million euros, which with its extension can reach 11.5 million euros.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54644561660_1eb68da428_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54644561660_4a07462f6f_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FUTER_ET\/status\/1942969943336640693\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Spanish Army's Land Force (FUTER) has demonstrated a multispectral camouflage test<\/a> on a VAMTAC of the VII \"Galicia\" Brigade (BRILAT). <em>\"Continuing with the modernization plan, <strong>BRILAT is testing the 3D \"second skin\" multispectral masking system on a VAMTAC vehicle<\/strong>, a camouflage technology that hides people or equipment from visual, infrared, thermal and radar detection\"<\/em>, FUTER noted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54643403077_57f6abec2a_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54643403077_1af66de3f5_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the images, we see that this camouflage netting covers the entire vehicle<\/strong>, with the sole exception of the windows and the rear external tanks. The camouflage also extends to the wheels. <strong>The camouflage netting pattern appears to be angular lines and three colors<\/strong> (brown and two shades of green).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54644470764_00406533ef_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54644470764_00c5875c88_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The vehicle chosen for this test is a VAMTAC ST-5<\/strong>, a variant with a Browning M-2 heavy machine gun turret (the gun is not mounted in the photos). <strong>I think it's a great step forward for the Spanish Army<\/strong>, which was lagging behind others in this regard.
