DeMille. The neighborhood had beautiful ocean views, and <strong>there was no reason to believe that it would all disappear in a few decades.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/staging-jubilee.flickr.com\/65535\/54659742313_8a120d3ab4_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-jubilee.flickr.com\/65535\/54659742313_72dd788c0d_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The old blocks of the Surfridge neighborhood, now deserted (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/freerangestock.com\/photos\/74004\/aerial-view-of-a-large-body-of-water.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Mantri<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>In 1928, an airfield, Mines Field, was built near Surfridge.<\/strong> It was a time when air shows had become very popular, and <strong>for the residents of that wealthy neighborhood, the airfield was just another luxury, but it soon became a nightmare.<\/strong> In 1930, Mines Field became the Los Angeles Municipal Airport. During World War II, it was a military base, and <strong>in 1949, it was renamed Los Angeles International Airport.<\/strong> It became busier and busier, first with noisy propeller planes and then with even louder jet planes. <strong>It was unbearable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/staging-jubilee.flickr.com\/65535\/54659742353_0bccd3de77_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging-jubilee.flickr.com\/65535\/54659742353_b405e90f13_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The Surfridge ghost town as seen from a commercial airplane in January 2014 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/joebehr\/11745909476\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Wolf<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>Finally, <strong>in the 1960s, the city of Los Angeles began expropriating the homes in Surfridge<\/strong>. The homes were eventually demolished, and the neighborhood was surrounded by fences and barbed wire, becoming an airport security zone. Today, <strong>Surfridge is a ghost town where only the old streets and no houses are visible<\/strong>. Access is prohibited and can lead to arrest.
