Much of the activity of the current president of the Spanish government, formed by a coalition of socialists and communists, consists of a constant rapprochement with anti-democratic regimes that violate the most basic human rights, violations that Sánchez never dedicates even the slightest criticism to.

More than 600 million euros for Mauritania in a year and a half

This week, Sánchez traveled again to Mauritania, a Muslim-majority country on the west coast of Africa. This is not the socialist leader's first trip to the country. A year ago, Sánchez traveled to Mauritania to promise to pay a ransom of 300 million euros, supposedly to stop illegal immigration from that country reaching the Spanish coast.

This blackmail took place after Mauritania failed to meet its commitments to Spain on migration in 2023 by preventing illegal immigrants who had been rescued by the Civil Guard off the coast of that African country from disembarking. Yesterday, Vozpópuli reported that in a year and a half, Sánchez has already handed over more than 600 million euros to that Islamic regime. That outlet noted the following:

"Spain is repeating the same tactic that has only served as a temporary patch on other occasions: betting on a good bilateral relationship in which Spain contributes generous amounts of money in exchange for strengthening the borders at the source... until they decide they want more."

Mauritania learns from Morocco's blackmail of Sánchez

The Mauritanian government is no fool: they have learned from their neighbors in Morocco, who have been blackmailing Sánchez with illegal immigration for years, promising to contain it and then unleashing it again and again on the Spanish borders of Ceuta and Melilla when the Moroccan kingdom decides that the millions given by Spain are not enough and asks for more. Morocco and Mauritania know that Sánchez has a weak government and they take advantage of him and his policy of tolerance towards illegal immigration, which is already causing an unsustainable situation in several Spanish regions.

An authoritarian regime that tolerates slavery

It should be noted that the multi-million euro sums that Sánchez has given to Mauritania do not include any human rights obligations. This would not be a problem if we were talking about a consolidated democracy, but that is not the case. Mauritania is classified as an authoritarian regime in The Economist Democracy Index, where it appears as country number 108 out of a list of 167. The human rights violations occurring in that country are serious enough for Sánchez to commit the money of the Spanish people without asking for anything in return.

To begin with, Mauritania was the last country in the world to abolish slavery, as late as 2007. Since its independence in 1960, Mauritania had already abolished slavery twice more, both in the year of its separation from France and in 1981. In reality, the Islamic regime continues to tolerate slavery, without there having been a single condemnation for this scourge. According to the 2023 Global Slavery Index by the NGO Walk Free, in Mauritania there are 149,000 people living in slavery out of a total population of 4.6 million. This means that in that country there is an average of 32 slaves per 1,000 inhabitants.

An Islamic regime that persecutes the Christian minority

In January 2025, the NGO Open Doors noted that Mauritania ranks 21st out of the 50 countries that most persecute Christians. The country's 11,000 Christians suffer very high levels of persecution, mainly because of the imposition of Islamic law: "Mauritania is staunchly Islamic and Christian activities are severely restricted, making it difficult for Christians to express their faith. For those who convert from Islam, it’s almost impossible. Christianity is viewed as a negative Western influence, and Christian converts face severe hostility both from the authorities and from their families. Apostasy is legally punishable by death", Open Doors notes, a penalty listed in Article 306 of the Mauritanian Penal Code.

Mauritanian law punishes homosexuality with the death penalty

Furthermore, Mauritania is also one of the few countries that punishes homosexuality with the death penalty. Although executions have not been carried out since 1987 due to a moratorium, Article 308 of the Penal Code, passed in 1983, still provides for the death penalty by public stoning. It could be reintroduced at any time.

Adultery is also punished with death

Likewise, Article 307 of the Penal Code provides for the death penalty by stoning also for adulterers if the offenders are married or divorced, while if a woman becomes pregnant outside of marriage, she is punished with 100 lashes and one year in prison. On the other hand, the aforementioned Article 306 of the Penal Code, which punishes apostasy from Islam with death, also provides for execution for "any adult Muslim who refuses to pray, acknowledging his obligation".

Seeing the monstrosities that the Mauritanian Islamist dictatorship includes in its Penal Code, it is worth asking: What do the feminists, Christians and homosexuals of the PSOE say about Sánchez's multi-million-dollar gifts to that regime at the expense of the Spanish people? Do they agree with these human rights violations, about which Sánchez has not issued even the slightest criticism so far?

---

Photo: La Moncloa.
