After all, <strong>moving on land is much more difficult than moving in the air or at sea, as there are many more obstacles<\/strong>, and a robotic vehicle would have to be truly autonomous and have considerable environmental recognition capabilities to avoid getting caught in any terrain hazards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54689587159_12965e9c4a_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54689587159_c2bf72c043_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Seattle, WA company seems determined to change that. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overland.ai\/vehicles\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Overland AI has been involved in the development of robotic ground vehicles in collaboration with DARPA and the US Armed Forces<\/a>. This range of systems includes wheeled (the General Dynamics S-MET and the Polaris RZR Turbo S4) and tracked (the Textron Ripsaw M5) vehicles. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/overland-ai_ultra-is-a-new-generation-of-autonomous-ground-activity-7322986764489392130-CdRb\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In April 2025, Overland AI launched its own autonomous robotic vehicle: the ULTRA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54689342026_001e70879d_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54689342026_cc0db5b6f6_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>This robotic vehicle can reach speeds of 56 km\/h (35 mph) off-road<\/strong>, with high-performance movements, recognizing and avoiding obstacles. <strong>It's also programmed to operate in swarms, like aerial drones, with a single operator controlling multiple vehicles.<\/strong> After all, the human operator doesn't drive the vehicles; they drive themselves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54689565878_d6c1fb3bae_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54689565878_3cb521b1ca_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>This vehicle is equipped with a SPARK system developed by Overland AI, with LiDAR cameras<\/strong> that detect the terrain using lasers, generating 3D models that allow the vehicle to know at all times where it is moving. <strong>SPARK is combined with the OverDrive software developed by this American company<\/strong>, offering these robotic vehicles complete autonomy on rough terrain and at high speeds. <strong>Here we can see the presentation video of the Overland AI ULTRA<\/strong>, which gives us an idea of its capabilities:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Overland AI | ULTRA | Fully Autonomous Tactical Vehicle\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZKA94l-Yzew?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Two weeks ago, Overland AI showed off the capabilities of its SPARK and OverDrive systems with this video<\/strong>, which shows a Polaris RZR light vehicle equipped with those systems moving fully autonomously through a pine forest: <em>\"<strong>The challenge is determining what vegetation is crushable, what must be avoided, and how to find the way to the next check point<\/strong> under dense canopy that makes satellite data unusable. Everything about this environment is hard for autonomy: <strong>It's hard to see due to the undergrowth, hard to plan when the vehicle can perceive nothing but trees<\/strong>, and hard to steer the vehicle through narrow gaps between the pines,\"<\/em> the company notes:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Overland AI | Fleet Vehicle | What Is Crushable?\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QaIXaO4y6Fg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This Wednesday, NATO's Joint Allied Command in Brunssum (JFCBS) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NATOJFCBS\/status\/1950597062321455319\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that during exercise Agile Spirit 25, <strong>US Army soldiers tested these robotic vehicles at the Vaziani training ground in the Republic of Georgia<\/strong>. This afternoon, Overland AI published a video of these tests:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Overland AI | Agile Spirit 25 | Republic of Georgia\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OwxPodELAQA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>This assessment was conducted by members of the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade<\/strong>, based in Vicenza, Italy: \"Over the next two weeks, <strong>ULTRA will support live training missions with U.S. Army Soldiers across rough, forested terrain<\/strong> at the Vaziani Training Area,\"<\/em> Overland AI notes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54689342016_743d3023ec_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54689342016_1d927b5d75_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>ULTRA vehicles are being used in this exercise for fully autonomous resupply missions<\/strong>, including point-to-point cargo delivery.
