September 11, 2001, is a date that millions of people have indelibly etched in their memories.<\/p>\n

The defenders of Ukraine deserve respect and the invaders do not deserve a reward<\/a><\/rel>
\nAn effect of appeasement: Putin targets Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n

That day we witnessed firsthand a horrendous terrorist attack against the United States<\/strong>, a country that many of us admire for its contribution to the fight for freedom and that we appreciate for being a very important part of Western culture. The 9\/11 terrorist attacks left nearly 3,000 dead and 25,000 injured<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The mastermind behind these attacks was Osama Bin Laden<\/strong>, leader of the Islamist terrorist organization Al Qaeda. After identifying him as the person responsible for the attacks, the United States launched a manhunt against him that culminated in his elimination on May 2, 2011<\/strong> in Abbottabad, Pakistan, by a Navy SEAL special operations team. In this way, the US sent a clear message to the world: whoever attacks that country will pay for it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine<\/a>, an invasion that the Kremlin had denied<\/a> until a few days before it began, in one of the largest disinformation operations the world has seen since World War II. In this invasion, and like Osama Bin Laden in the US, Russia has systematically attacked the civilian population of Ukraine<\/strong>, perpetrating massacres such as those in Bucha and Izyum and launching constant airstrikes against residential buildings, hospitals, churches and schools.<\/p>\n

According to data published by the UN on August 13, 2025, this invasion has already killed 13,883 civilians, including 726 children, and left 35,548 injured, including 2,234 children<\/a>. The final figures will surely be much higher, but for now this Russian terrorist attack on Ukraine already far exceeds the deaths and injuries from the 9\/11 terrorist attacks on the US<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Once again postponing his ultimatums to Russia, Donald Trump met with Vladimir Putin in Alaska yesterday<\/strong>, supposedly with the aim of achieving peace in Ukraine. A few hours before the meeting was due to begin, Russia attacked the center of the Ukrainian city of Sumy<\/a>, clearly demonstrating the dictatorship's lack of will to end its aggression against Ukraine. As expected, the Alaska meeting ended without any agreement and was a failure for the free world<\/a>. I make this important clarification because, as was also predictable, the Russian dictator has seemed very happy with this meeting<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Obviously, for Putin, any act that contributes to breaking his international isolation is a victory<\/strong>, and it is even more so when that isolation is broken by the president of the most powerful democracy in the world. Every time the Russian dictator manages to get a democratic leader to shake his hand, the Kremlin has a new reason to celebrate<\/strong>, since it sends a perverse message to the entire world: that a bloodthirsty dictator and war criminal like Putin deserves to be treated with the utmost respect by those rulers who hold their office after being elected in free and democratic elections and who have not committed the war crimes and crimes against humanity that Putin has perpetrated in Ukraine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Throughout history, dialogue with terrorists has only served to legitimize the criminals and allow them to politically profit from their crimes<\/strong>, obtaining concessions from democratic countries that would have been unthinkable if the terrorists had not resorted to the most brutal forms of violence to achieve political goals. That's why I'm surprised to see so many people praising Trump for meeting with Putin<\/strong>, especially people who once approved of the elimination of Osama Bin Laden.<\/p>\n

Would those people have approved of Trump shaking Bin Laden's hand after 9\/11?<\/strong> How would the American people have reacted if such a meeting had taken place, with Bin Laden shaking hands with any leader of a democratic country? How are the Ukrainian people supposed to react to seeing Trump shaking hands with the criminal who is murdering Ukrainian men, women, and children?<\/strong> Yesterday's meeting had the only result of something that completely breaks with official US policy of many years: a criminal is given hope that he will go unpunished and that his crimes will also be profitable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Therefore, yesterday's meeting in Alaska was only useful for Putin and was an infamous act for the free world<\/strong>, for those of us who believe that terrorism must be firmly fought and that criminals must pay for their crimes. After that meeting, peace is no closer to Ukraine: all Trump has done is give oxygen to the invaders<\/strong>, giving them hope that their invasion will be successful, even if only partially, and that they can profit from the murder of tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilians, including children<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
