{"id":60531,"date":"2025-08-19T06:51:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-19T04:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=60531"},"modified":"2025-08-21T06:51:27","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T04:51:27","slug":"29-writers-murdered-in-the-spanish-civil-war-that-the-left-wing-never-remembers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/08\/19\/29-writers-murdered-in-the-spanish-civil-war-that-the-left-wing-never-remembers\/","title":{"rendered":"29 writers murdered in the Spanish Civil War that the left-wing never remembers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All the war crimes committed during the Spanish Civil War deserve to be remembered, but many of them are forgotten by some.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/10\/21\/spain-a-totalitarian-law-that-hides-the-war-crimes-of-the-left-comes-into-force\/\">Spain: a totalitarian law that hides the war crimes of the left comes into force<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2017\/11\/07\/the-names-of-the-50-children-killed-by-communists-in-the-paracuellos-massacre\/\">The names of the 50 children killed by communists in the Paracuellos massacre<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/oscar_puente_\/status\/1957362496811012222\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the socialist minister \u00d3scar Puente remembered the poet Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca<\/a>, assassinated by the Nationalist side on August 18, 1936, stating: <em>\"<strong>The heirs of that barbarity would do it again today<\/strong>\".<\/em> Puente does not explain who he considers those heirs to be.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is that <strong>today in Spain there are three parties with parliamentary presence that were implicated in war crimes during the Spanish Civil War:<\/strong> the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE, to which \u00d3scar Puente belongs), the Communist Party of Spain (PCE, which has two female ministers in the government of which \u00d3scar Puente is a member) and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC, an ally of the government in which \u00d3scar Puente is a member). <strong>None of these three parties have ever apologized for the crimes in which they were implicated: they haven't even acknowledged them.<\/strong> What's more, in 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/10\/21\/spain-a-totalitarian-law-that-hides-the-war-crimes-of-the-left-comes-into-force\/\">these parties supported a law that omits any mention of leftist crimes in the Civil War<\/a>, a law that they themselves titled the \"law of democratic memory,\" with astonishing cynicism.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, <strong>the writers murdered by both sides deserve to be remembered<\/strong>. Sadly, the left never remembers those killed by the Republican side, simply because their killers were leftists. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2019\/08\/19\/los-escritores-que-la-izquierda-no-recuerda-porque-los-asesino-el-bando-republicano\/\">In 2019, I published a list of them here<\/a>. Since they continue to be marginalized by the government, I am republishing it now so that <strong>their names are not forgotten by the historical amnesia decreed by the left:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Salvador Vicente Alarc\u00f3n Horcas:<\/b> born in Baena (C\u00f3rdoba) on April 5, 1884. Writer and Supreme Court judge. He was Catholic and remained loyal to the Republican government after the 1936 uprising. Despite this, after a communist newspaper accused him of having participated in the trial against the leftist coup d'\u00e9tat of 1934, <b>he was arrested and murdered by Popular Front militiamen on August 13, 1936 in Madrid.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>\u00c1lvaro Alcal\u00e1-Galiano y Osma:<\/b> Born in Madrid on April 29, 1886, he was a writer and literary critic. A member of the Spanish Renewal movement, <b>he was assassinated by the communists on July 28, 1936 in Madrid<\/b>, along with his brother Juan.<\/li>\n<li><b>Joaqu\u00edn Amigo Aguado:<\/b> Born in Granada, he was a writer, member of the Generation of '27, and professor of literature. He was a member of the Night Adoration movement and a devotee of Our Lady of Lourdes. He was a friend of Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca and collaborated with him on the magazine \"Gallo.\" <strong>He was assassinated by the Republicans on August 27, 1936, in Ronda (M\u00e1laga) for being Catholic.<\/strong> They killed him nine days after the other side killed his friend Federico. His assassins threw him down the Tajo gorge in Ronda.<\/li>\n<li><b>Camillo Berneri:<\/b> Born in Lodi (Italy) in 1897, he was a philosopher and writer. He was a member of the socialist and later anarchist factions. He arrived in Spain with other Italian volunteers to fight on the Republican side. <b>On May 5, 1937, he was arrested and murdered by a group of socialist and communist militiamen in Barcelona<\/b>, during the events in which anarchists and Trotskyist communists clashed with socialists and Stalinist communists in Catalonia.<\/li>\n<li><b>Rufino Blanco S\u00e1nchez:<\/b> Born in Mantiel (Guadalajara) on November 16, 1861, he was a teacher, writer, and journalist, and served as vice president of the Madrid Press Association. <b>A Catholic and monarchist, he was murdered on October 2, 1936, in Madrid, by anarchist CNT militiamen, who took him from his home along with his son, ABC journalist Juli\u00e1n Blanco P\u00e9rez del Camino. Both were taken to a Cheka (a detention and torture center), and the next day their bodies were found in a ditch on the Burgos road.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Manuel Bueno Bengoechea:<\/strong> Born in Pau (France) on June 14, 1874 to a Spanish mother and an Argentine father. He was a writer and journalist, writing several novels and plays. He belonged to the Generation of '98. <strong>A Catholic and conservative, he was assassinated by leftist militiamen on August 11, 1936 in Barcelona.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Andr\u00e9s Manuel Calzada Echeverr\u00eda:<\/strong> born in Barcelona on November 30, 1892. As a writer, he devoted himself to essays on historical and architectural issues. <strong>A member of the Spanish Falange, he was assassinated by leftists on April 5, 1938 in Casteldefels (Barcelona).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jos\u00e9 Canalejas Fern\u00e1ndez:<\/strong> was born in Bayonne (France) on March 30, 1904. Writer and son of the liberal politician from Ferrol, Jos\u00e9 Canalejas M\u00e9ndez, who was murdered in an anarchist attack in 1912. <strong>He was assassinated by the Republicans on September 21, 1936.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Luis Carpio Moraga:<\/strong> poet, novelist and playwright born in Baeza (Ja\u00e9n) on September 13, 1884. <strong>Catholic and conservative, he was assassinated by leftist militiamen on January 12, 1937 in Martos (Ja\u00e9n).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Jaime Jos\u00e9 Emilio El\u00edas Quiroga y Pardo Baz\u00e1n:<\/b> born in La Coru\u00f1a on July 21, 1876. He was the firstborn son of the Coru\u00f1a writer Emilia Pardo Baz\u00e1n. Writer and soldier, <strong>he was Catholic and monarchist and was assassinated by the Republicans on August 11, 1936 in Madrid<\/strong>, along with his only son, Jaime Quiroga y Esteban Collantes, aged 19.<\/li>\n<li><b>Enrique Est\u00e9vez Ortega:<\/b> Born in Madrid in 1898. Writer and theater critic, he was one of the intellectuals who frequented the Caf\u00e9 Lion d'Or on Alcal\u00e1 Street, a favorite haunt of several authors from the Generation of '98 and the Generation of '27. <b>He was assassinated by the Republicans on September 6, 1936 in Madrid.<\/b> His remains rest in the La Almudena Cemetery in Madrid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Zacar\u00edas Garc\u00eda Villada:<\/strong> born in Gat\u00f3n de Campos (Valladolid) on March 16, 1879. He was a priest, writer, and historian. <strong>He was shot by the Republicans on October 1, 1936, in Vic\u00e1lvaro (Madrid).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Hinojosa Lasarte:<\/strong> born in Campillos (M\u00e1laga) on October 17, 1904. Surrealist poet of the Generation of '27, he was a friend of Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca and Salvador Dal\u00ed. <strong>Catholic and traditionalist, he was murdered by leftist militiamen on August 22, 1936 in M\u00e1laga<\/strong>, along with his father and brother.<\/li>\n<li><b>\u00c1lvaro L\u00f3pez N\u00fa\u00f1ez:<\/b> Born in Le\u00f3n on June 2, 1865, he was a journalist and writer. <strong>A Catholic and Christian Democrat, he was murdered by Republicans on September 30, 1936 in Madrid<\/strong>, at the walls of the Almudena Cemetery, along with his daughter Esther.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Esther L\u00f3pez Valencia:<\/strong> Daughter of \u00c1lvaro L\u00f3pez N\u00fa\u00f1ez and a writer like him. <strong>She was murdered by the Republicans on September 30, 1936 in Madrid,<\/strong>, along with her father, at the walls of the Almudena Cemetery.<\/li>\n<li><b>Ramiro de Maeztu y Whitney:<\/b> Born in Vitoria on May 4, 1874, he was one of the most prominent authors of the so-called Generation of '98. He was better known for his essayist than for his poetry. <strong>A Catholic and traditionalist, he was assassinated by the communists at the walls of the Aravaca cemetery (Madrid) on October 29, 1936.<\/strong> Also assassinated with him was Ramiro Ledesma, a former leader of the Spanish Falange. Before being shot, the Basque author exclaimed: <em>\"You don't know why you're killing me, but I do know why I'm dying: so that your children can be better than you!\"<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ram\u00f3n Mart\u00ednez de la Riva:<\/strong> Writer and contributor to the newspaper Abc, <strong>he was assassinated by the Republicans on September 26, 1936 at the University City of Madrid.<\/strong> Today his remains rest in the La Almudena Cemetery in Madrid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Honorio Maura Gamazo:<\/strong> Born in Madrid in 1886, he was a writer of plays, especially comedies. A Catholic and monarchist, he was arrested while vacationing in Zarauz (Guip\u00fazcoa). <strong>He was murdered by anarchist militiamen from the Iberian Anarchist Federation (FAI) on September 4, 1936, in Fuenterrab\u00eda (Guip\u00fazcoa).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pedro Mu\u00f1oz Seca:<\/strong> Born in El Puerto de Santa Mar\u00eda (C\u00e1diz) on February 20, 1879, he belonged to the Generation of '14. He was a prolific playwright. <strong>A Catholic and monarchist, he was murdered by communists on November 28, 1936, during the Paracuellos de Jarama massacre (Madrid).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Fernando de la Quadra Salcedo y Arrieta Mascarua:<\/b> Born in G\u00fce\u00f1es (Vizcaya) in 1890. Writer and historian, <strong>he was murdered by the Republicans on September 25, 1936 in Bilbao<\/strong>, on the prison ship \"Altuna Mendi\".<\/li>\n<li><b>Estanislao Rico Ariza:<\/b> Born in Barcelona on November 13, 1895, he was a writer, journalist, and trade unionist. <b>He was a Catholic and traditionalist, and was assassinated by the Republicans on November 26, 1936, in Moncada y Reixach (Barcelona).<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Ruano y Corbo:<\/strong> Born in Salamanca on March 28, 1870, he was a writer, professor of language and literature, and literary critic. <strong>A Catholic and traditionalist, he was murdered by communists on November 7, 1936, during the Paracuellos del Jarama Massacre (Madrid).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Emilio Ruiz Mu\u00f1oz:<\/strong> Born in Almer\u00eda in 1874, he was a priest, writer, and journalist. <strong>A traditionalist, he was assassinated by leftist militiamen on September 4, 1936, in Madrid.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Pablo S\u00e1enz de Bar\u00e9s:<\/b> Born in Segovia on June 29, 1878, he was a writer, poet, and Doctor of Law. <strong>A Catholic and traditionalist, he was murdered by the Republicans in 1939, possibly in Barcelona<\/strong>, since the date and place of his murder are still unknown to this day..<\/li>\n<li><b>Benedicto Torralba de Damas:<\/b> Born in Salobre\u00f1a (Granada) on September 10, 1899, he was a writer of plays and novels, and also a poet. <b>A Catholic and traditionalist, he was murdered by the Republicans on November 14, 1936 in Ponts (Lleida).<\/b> To this day, his burial place is unknown.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antonio Miguel Torr\u00f3 Sansalvador:<\/strong> Born in Concentaina (Alicante) in 1887, he was a writer, philosopher, teacher, and Franciscan religious. One of his students was the philosopher and physician Pedro La\u00edn Entralgo. <strong>He was assassinated by the Republicans on March 7, 1937 in Alcoy (Alicante).<\/strong> On March 11, 2001, he was beatified by Pope Saint John Paul II, along with 232 other martyrs of religious persecution killed by the Republican side in the Valencia region during the Spanish Civil War.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Francisco de Paula Ure\u00f1a Navas:<\/strong> Born in Torredonjimeno (Ja\u00e9n) on June 22, 1871. The son of farmers, he was a journalist, writer, and poet. <strong>A Catholic and traditionalist, he was murdered by Republicans in August 1936 in Vic\u00e1lvaro (Madrid)<\/strong>, along with his firstborn son.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Francisco Vald\u00e9s Nicolau:<\/strong> Born in Don Benito (Badajoz) in 1892. Writer and lawyer. <strong>He was assassinated by leftist militiamen on September 4, 1936, in his hometown.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Luis Carlos Viada y Lluch:<\/strong> Born in Barcelona on July 11, 1863, he was a writer and journalist, and wrote numerous poems in Spanish and Catalan. <strong>A Catholic and traditionalist, he died on February 2, 1938<\/strong>, as a result of the brutal beating he received from leftist militiamen in Barcelona.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>---<\/p>\n<p><small>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/7082287551\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elentir<\/a>.
