{"id":60556,"date":"2025-08-22T07:25:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T05:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=60556"},"modified":"2025-08-28T15:48:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T13:48:10","slug":"this-is-how-the-powerful-eurojet-ej200-engines-of-the-eurofighters-are-maintained-and-tested","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/08\/22\/this-is-how-the-powerful-eurojet-ej200-engines-of-the-eurofighters-are-maintained-and-tested\/","title":{"rendered":"This is how the powerful Eurojet EJ200 engines of the Eurofighters are maintained and tested"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Eurofighter Typhoon is one of the most advanced fighter aircraft on the market, a model known for its maneuverability and power.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/07\/16\/a-pilot-shows-up-close-a-spanish-eurofighter-that-intercepted-russian-aircraft\/\">A pilot shows up close a Spanish Eurofighter that intercepted Russian aircraft<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/12\/30\/the-rivalry-between-the-f-35-and-the-eurofighter-analyzed-by-their-operators-and-their-sales\/\">The rivalry between the F-35 and the Eurofighter analyzed by their operators and their sales<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Eurofighter's powerplant consists of two Eurojet EJ200 turbofan engines<\/strong>, based on the Rolls-Royce XG-40 and manufactured by the Eurojet Turbo GmbH consortium, formed in 1991 by four companies: the British Rolls-Royce, the Spanish ITP, the Italian Avio and the German MTU Aero Engines. <strong>The two engines are located in the rear of the fuselage<\/strong>, with each nozzle adjustable automatically to increase or decrease the flow of the jet emitted by the engine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54736768639_9069e53ccc_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54736768639_058a162e2d_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Each EJ200 engine is made up of around 3,500 different parts<\/strong>, measures 4 metres long, has a diameter of 0.7 metres and a dry weight of approximately one tonne. <strong>The EJ200 offers a thrust of 60.1 kN without afterburner and 89.9 kN with afterburner.<\/strong> To give us an idea, it is the most powerful fighter engine ever operated by the Spanish Air Force (<strong>the EF-18 Hornet engine reaches a maximum thrust of 71.2 kN<\/strong>, with the difference that it is a heavier aircraft -12,701 kg empty- than the Eurofighter Typhoon, whose empty weight is 11,000 kg).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54736526646_699f50de62_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54736526646_36a9e5d61e_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, <strong>the Eurofighter's engines can be disassembled for maintenance work<\/strong> that requires a more detailed examination of each turbofan. These procedures depend on the flight hours or cycles of each aircraft (one cycle is considered each takeoff, flight, and landing process), although <strong>there are ranges of between 1,000 and 1,200 flight hours before having to perform maintenance that includes disassembling an engine<\/strong> and subjecting it to a test bench. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infodefensa.com\/texto-diario\/mostrar\/4696761\/primera-revision-2000-horas-vuelo-caza-eurofighter-ejercito-aire-espanol\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The first Spanish Eurofighter to reach 2,000 flight hours did so in January 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54736526651_d4c0a68809_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54736526651_f2c70135aa_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@Eurofighter-Typhoon\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Eurofighter Typhoon consortium<\/a> published an interesting video in which we see <strong>the maintenance process of Eurofighter engines at the MTU Aero Engines factory in Munich<\/strong>, including one of these turbofans passing through a test bench:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Transformers: The Eurofighter Engines\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZjUmBwWFCTY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can see some screenshots from this video here. <strong>At the beginning, we see images of a Spanish Eurofighter from Wing 11, the C.16-28 (11-08)<\/strong>, as it engages afterburner for takeoff:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54735719642_950d3e5359_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54735719642_332a60b8dc_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here we see the part of the engine where the fuel is injected<\/strong>, generating the enormous amount of thrust this turbofan delivers.
