The Regia Marina (Royal Navy) of Italy was a naval force created in 1861 and which in 1946 gave rise to the current Marina Militare Italiana.<\/p>\n
During World War II, the Royal Marina was one of the most powerful naval forces in the world.<\/strong> According to the Marina Militare<\/a>, at the outbreak of that war Italy had 6 battleships, 12 light cruisers, more than 100 destroyers and torpedo boats, and a huge force of more than 100 submarines<\/strong>, an enormous force that was, however, hampered by its weaknesses, especially its lack of air support and the absence of modern radars and sonars.<\/p>\n Despite these shortcomings, the Regia Marina played an important role in the Mediterranean<\/strong>, with the island of Sicily being one of its strategic enclaves for controlling North Africa.
