She had two sisters: Wies\u0142awa and Irena. <strong>Four days after Danuta turned 11, on September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland<\/strong>, triggering the outbreak of World War II. A few days later, <strong>on September 17, the USSR invaded eastern Poland<\/strong>, as part of a strategy previously agreed upon with the Germans in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/09\/03\/united-by-hatred-of-democracy-a-revealing-telegram-about-the-nazi-soviet-pact-of-1939\/\">Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact<\/a>. <\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54763383858_bd6c406724_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54763383858_bd6c406724_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Danuta in a photo taken when she was a child (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/biogramy.ipn.gov.pl\/bio\/wszystkie-biogramy\/106202,Danuta-Siedzikowna-quotInkaquot.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instytut Pami\u0119ci Narodowej<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>The war tore Danuta's family apart. <strong>Her father was deported to the Gulag by the Soviets on February 10, 1940<\/strong>, later joining General W\u0142adys\u0142aw Anders's Second Polish Corps alongside other Poles deported by Stalin. Wac\u0142aw Siedzik died in Tehran on June 6, 1943. <strong>Her mother enlisted in the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2017\/02\/14\/armia-krajowa-75-years-ago-was-founded-the-largest-resistance-movement-of-the-ww2\/\">Armia Krajowa<\/a> (AK, Home Army), the main Polish resistance organization against nazi Germany, and <strong>was arrested by the Gestapo in November 1942 and shot in September 1943<\/strong> in a forest near Bia\u0142ystok.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54763143981_22aa2f37b1_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54763143981_22aa2f37b1_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Danuta in a photo taken in 1942 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/biogramy.ipn.gov.pl\/bio\/wszystkie-biogramy\/106202,Danuta-Siedzikowna-quotInkaquot.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instytut Pami\u0119ci Narodowej<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>After their mother was murdered, <strong>Danuta and her sister Wies\u0142awa joined the Armia Krajowa in December 1943<\/strong>, training as nurses. After the end of the war, like other members of the AK, <strong>Danuta suffered the repression of the communist dictatorship imposed by Stalin in Poland against members of the resistance loyal to the Polish government in exile<\/strong>, who made up the vast majority of the Polish insurgents who had fought against the Germans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54763489330_e6fa6a62a1_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54763489330_48d8971598_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The most famous portrait of Danuta, a photo taken during World War II (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/biogramy.ipn.gov.pl\/bio\/wszystkie-biogramy\/106202,Danuta-Siedzikowna-quotInkaquot.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instytut Pami\u0119ci Narodowej<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>In June 1945, she was arrested by agents of the NKVD,<\/strong> Stalin's secret police. It was to no avail. On August 3, 1946, a court-martial presided over by Adam Gajewski sentenced her to death despite her age of 17, even though the minimum age for capital punishment was 18. <strong>Danuta was shot on August 28, 1946.<\/strong> According to a witness, <strong>her last words were: \"Niech \u017cyje Polska! Niech \u017cyje \u0141upaszko!\"<\/strong> (Long live Poland! After the fall of communism, <strong>Danuta was rehabilitated on June 10, 1991<\/strong>, by the Gdansk Provincial Court.
