This year was the first Maryland ANG A-10C to be sent to the Davis-Monthan AFB aircraft boneyard (Photo: U.S. Air National Guard).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Between 1972 and 1984, 715 A-10s were manufactured.<\/strong> According to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/article\/2025-usaf-ussf-almanac-equipment\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">USAF Almanac 2025<\/a>, <strong>219 A-10s of the A-10C variant remain in active service today.<\/strong> The majority of these (141) are in USAF fighter squadrons, with 31 in the Air National Guard (ANG) and 47 in the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC). <strong>Three Air National Guards operate the A-10: those of Idaho, Maryland, and Michigan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54767569084_6611c9a6a6_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54767569084_4c0b7d3b47_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Another image of A-10C AF78-705 (78-0705). The dispatch of these aircraft to the Davis-Monthan AFB boneyard marks the end of an era that began in 1979 with the arrival of the first A-10As to the Maryland ANG (Photo: U.S. Air National Guard).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The Maryland Air National Guard was the first to receive the A-10, in 1979<\/strong>, as part of its 175th Wing, 104th Fighter Squadron, based at Warfield ANGB, east of Baltimore. <strong>It received its aircraft directly from Fairchild's factory in Hagerstown<\/strong>, located in the same state. In 2007, the Maryland ANG's A-10As were replaced with the current A-10Cs. <strong>In 2010, the Maryland ANG's A-10Cs deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan<\/strong>, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54766492162_8e61d1fe4d_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54766492162_596e4eb8ec_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Maryland ANG A-10C in display at the Bollen Air-to-Ground Range, Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, August 9, 2025 (Photo: U.S. Air National Guard).<\/div>\n<p><strong>This year, the Maryland ANG has begun sending some of its A-10Cs to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/04\/29\/davis-monthan-afb-a-bus-tour-of-the-worlds-largest-aircraft-graveyard\/\">the Davis-Monthan AFB aircraft boneyard<\/a>, marking the end of active service for these fine aircraft. The Warthog was developed around this powerful cannon, specially designed to destroy armored vehicles.
