{"id":60746,"date":"2020-08-16T17:12:02","date_gmt":"2020-08-16T15:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=60746"},"modified":"2025-09-09T22:47:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T20:47:47","slug":"this-is-how-you-use-the-molle-system-that-youll-find-on-many-military-backpacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2020\/08\/16\/this-is-how-you-use-the-molle-system-that-youll-find-on-many-military-backpacks\/","title":{"rendered":"This is how you use the MOLLE system that you'll find on many military backpacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you're a military fan or own a military-style backpack, you'll have noticed that it has a series of parallel strips of fabric on some surfaces.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/11\/16\/the-video-of-a-us-army-sergeant-showing-how-to-configure-an-ach-helmet\/\">The video of a US Army sergeant showing how to configure an ACH helmet<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/10\/23\/mitznefet-the-history-of-the-helmet-cover-used-by-israeli-army-soldiers\/\">Mitznefet, the history of the helmet cover used by Israeli Army soldiers<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>The military is already familiar with this system, called <strong>MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment)<\/strong>, and popularly known as \"Molly\" by members of the US Armed Forces, but it is less well known among civilians. <strong>This system was introduced in 1997 and popularized after 9\/11, in order to replace the Alice system<\/strong>, which was used for more than 30 years in the militaries of several countries.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50232865271_b98cd58381_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:1px solid #bba993;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The MOLLE system consists of a series of 25mm wide strips of fabric, separated by a 38mm gap<\/strong> (above). They are used in backpacks and tactical vests to facilitate the attachment of all kinds of accessories. <strong>Recently, items incorporating the MOLLE system with laser-cut slots on the fabric are being produced<\/strong> (below), which looks better aesthetically than typical parallel strips of fabric, if only - for example - because a camouflaged backpack does not have to carry a bunch of fabric strips that hide its camouflage pattern.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/50233085402_b980699e8b_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:1px solid #bba993;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><big>The risks of not using MOLLE correctly, as told by a Navy SEAL<\/big><\/p>\n<p>In military circles, there were <strong>some setbacks in the beginning due to not using it correctly.<\/strong> Navy SEAL Mark Owen, in chapter 3 of his book \"No Easy Day\" (2012), recounts what happened when he and other DEVGRU operators, along with some members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2020\/07\/09\/silenciosos-y-oscuros-asi-es-el-grom-la-mas-celebre-de-las-fuerzas-especiales-de-polonia\/\">Polish GROM<\/a>, participated in a heliborne assault on a dam in Mukatayin (Iraq). <strong>By not having their equipment properly strapped to the MOLLE system of their bulletproof vests, a SEAL lost a radio backpack<\/strong> (it went to the bottom of the dam) and a medical assistant also lost a briefcase full of morphine.<\/p>\n<p>The Polish company Helikon Tex, which makes very good military-grade equipment, has published a video explaining how to use this system:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V6s7IctrCP8\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, <strong>the key is to interlock the straps of the accessory you want to attach with the MOLLE system<\/strong> of the backpack or vest. Some people only attach the straps of the accessory to the first MOLLE straps, and at most, to the last.
