{"id":60773,"date":"2025-09-11T21:45:47","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T19:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=60773"},"modified":"2025-09-18T23:38:41","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T21:38:41","slug":"the-launching-and-characteristics-of-the-first-spanish-frigate-of-the-bonifaz-class-f-110","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/09\/11\/the-launching-and-characteristics-of-the-first-spanish-frigate-of-the-bonifaz-class-f-110\/","title":{"rendered":"The launching and characteristics of the first Spanish frigate of the 'Bonifaz' class F-110"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This Thursday, September 11, the Spanish Navy experienced a very special day with the launch of the first of its future frigates.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/09\/12\/naval-strike-missile-the-modern-anti-ship-missile-that-the-spanish-navy-will-receive\/\">Naval Strike Missile: the modern anti-ship missile that the Spanish Navy will receive<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/05\/21\/the-launch-of-a-rim-162-essm-missile-by-the-spanish-frigate-cristobal-colon\/\">The launch of a RIM-162 ESSM missile by the Spanish frigate 'Crist\u00f3bal Col\u00f3n'<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>The launch took place at the Navantia Ferrol shipyards<\/strong> in this city in northern Galicia, near the Ferrol Military Arsenal, where the five <strong>\"\u00c1lvaro de Baz\u00e1n\" F-100 class<\/strong> frigates are based, which are currently the most modern combat ships in Spain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780840040_613d7211fa_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780840040_5195402759_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The frigate \"Bonifaz\" is 145 meters long<\/strong>, 18 meters wide, and has a draft of 5 meters. It is expected to have <strong>a displacement of 6,100 tons<\/strong>, which means it will be lighter than the last of the F-100 frigates, the \"Crist\u00f3bal Col\u00f3n\" F-105, which has a displacement of 6,391 tons (it is the heaviest of its class: the first, the \"\u00c1lvaro de Baz\u00e1n\" F-101, has a displacement of 5,800 tons).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780736654_ddeca3074e_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780736654_06d65e3990_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The launching ceremony began at 7:00 p.m., coinciding with high tide. <strong>Her Majesty Queen Sofia was the ship's godmother<\/strong>, performing the traditional throwing of a bottle against the hull of the ship, after a chaplain blessed the vessel. <strong>You can watch the video of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navantia.es\/es\/actualidad\/ferias-y-eventos\/botadura-primera-fragata-f111-bonifaz\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the live broadcast of the launch broadcast by Navantia<\/a> here:<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/event\/5365832\/embed\/02aa93ebe3?autoplay=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"fullscreen; picture-in-picture; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen style=\"top:0;left:0;width:665px;height:374px;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The frigate \"Bonifaz\" was authorized on March 29, 2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/04\/06\/se-inicia-la-construccion-de-la-primera-f-110-asi-seran-las-fragatas-espanolas-del-futuro\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The construction of the ship began on April 6, 2022<\/a> with its laying on the slipway. <strong>It is scheduled to enter service with the Spanish Navy in 2028.<\/strong> You can see some images of the launch here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54779659087_0309698211_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54779659087_7ded15fceb_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Navantia Ferrol shipyards were packed with people for this event.<\/strong> After all, the launch of the first frigate of a class is always a historic moment. <strong>Spain belongs to a select club of countries capable of building their own frigates<\/strong>, and these are also ships with performance that places them among the best in the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780736679_12069dcc4f_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780736679_67c94a4db4_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The F-110 frigates will have a large hangar with capacity for two helicopters<\/strong>, unlike the F-100s, which can only accommodate one. These frigates <strong>will be able to operate Seahawk and NH-90 helicopters, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780736609_284f597c5a_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780736609_9a70c08253_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\"<strong>The F-110 frigates destined for the Spanish Navy are multipurpose escort vessels, with anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-submarine capabilities<\/strong> to carry out their duties, especially in the force protection and naval power projection profiles,\"<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navantia.es\/es\/producto\/f110\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Navantia points out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780840030_09245977a9_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780840030_5d9fffe307_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Spanish company highlights that the F-110 frigate is <em>\"<strong>equipped with advanced technology and defense capabilities, representing a significant leap toward the concept of a 21st-century Smart Ship<\/strong>.\"<\/em> The ship <em>\"incorporates state-of-the-art combat systems, advanced sensors, and electronic warfare capabilities.\"<\/em> In addition, <strong>the F-110s will carry 3D printers on board<\/strong> <em>\"to print some of their spare parts.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780508826_d18dfb0d0b_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780508826_608a48dc89_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Navantia also highlights the F-110's Integrated Services System (SSI):<\/strong> <em>\"developed in collaboration with the Universities of Vigo and Coru\u00f1a, it <strong>significantly reduces the volume of the ship's cables through a neural network based on 2,000 light points<\/strong>. It integrates lighting, public address, supervision, cameras, wireless services and sensors into a single system, facilitating interaction with the crew.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780736614_46eb2b3837_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780736614_71b181e66a_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The F-110s will be armed with a Leonardo 127\/64 LW rapid-fire gun<\/strong>, with a caliber of 127 mm and capable of firing up to 32 rounds per minute. It will be installed in the bow. <strong>Behind the cannon will be the MK41 Baseline VII VLS missile launcher,<\/strong> consisting of 16 cells that can launch RIM-66M-2 Standard SM-2MR Block IIIA and RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) surface-to-air missiles, as well as surface-to-surface cruise missiles. In addition, the ship will have <strong>2 quadruple launchers of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/09\/12\/naval-strike-missile-the-modern-anti-ship-missile-that-the-spanish-navy-will-receive\/\">Naval Strike Missile (NSM) cruise missiles<\/a>. Among the offensive systems there are also <strong>2 double launchers of 324 mm Raytheon Mark 54 MAKO light torpedoes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780508726_b36b74cd4f_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54780508726_2789324f77_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ship's defensive systems will also include <strong>a Sentinel RFG 25 CIWS turret with a 25mm GAU-12\/U Equalizer rotary cannon<\/strong>, a weapon specifically designed to shoot down missiles. The stern will have <strong>two remotely controlled RWS Sentinel 30 turrets<\/strong> equipped with 30mm Mk44S Bushmaster II cannons, and at different points on the ship there will be <strong>four remote RWS Sentinel 2.0 stations<\/strong> with 12.7mm M2 Browning machine guns.
