This is a Baltic Air Policing (BAP) mission with NATO, in which Spanish fighter jets are participating for the 12th time to <strong>provide support to three NATO member countries (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia)<\/strong> that have very small air forces and no combat aircraft of their own. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EMADmde\/status\/1957519617972400372\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In mid-August, the Vilkas Detachment incorporated an A400M Atlas tanker aircraft<\/a> from the 31st Wing (below), based in Zaragoza.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54792201754_ee4bd7fc90_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54792201754_8a254681e5_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/emad.defensa.gob.es\/operaciones\/operaciones-en-el-exterior\/36_Persistent_Effort\/36.1_Enhanced_Air_Policing\/noticias\/listado\/250915-ni-dat-vilkas-activaciones.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Spanish Defense Staff (EMAD) reported the interceptions made by these fighters in recent weeks<\/a>, indicating that <em><strong>\"eight air policing missions have been carried out since the beginning of their deployment\"<\/strong><\/em>. The statement released by the EMAD indicates that <strong>in the entire month of August there were only three alarms<\/strong> that led to the same number of sorties by Spanish fighters <em>\"for track reconnaissance carried out over the Baltic.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54791114747_77faefa2a8_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54791114747_15fe793c51_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>so far this September there have already been five Alpha Scramble alarms<\/strong>, as the alarms to intercept unidentified aircraft are known in NATO, which fly with the transponder off, without communicating the flight plan or without responding to calls from air traffic control, <strong>practices that violate international aviation regulations and that Russian military aircraft have a habit of doing<\/strong> on their flights between Russia and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, bordering the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54792201759_50972fddb9_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54792201759_a1e848ff7f_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to EMAD, <strong>of those five alerts in September, three were about \"traffic in the Baltic Sea\"<\/strong> (i.e., Russian aircraft flying over international waters under the conditions described in the previous paragraph), <strong>and two others were about \"traces corresponding to unconfirmed objects\"<\/strong>, specifically possible drones flying over land. These alerts are communicated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ac.nato.int\/about\/caoc\/uedem\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NATO Combined Air Operations Centre-Uedem (CAOC-U)<\/a>, located in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54791114787_7d2855cdd9_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54791114787_e610c93353_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The EMAD has indicated that <strong>on September 9 there were three Alpha Scramble alarms<\/strong>. The first was activated by <em>\"unidentified traffic coming from the Kaliningrad region and flying north, close to the sovereignty space of the Baltic republics.\"<\/em> <strong>The Spanish fighters identified the aircraft as a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 transport aircraft<\/strong>, specifically an Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A, the RF-78672, operated by the <strong>Russian Air Force<\/strong> (above).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54791958356_6ca8bb7d0a_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54791958356_a563c8ceec_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The second alarm on September 9 was activated by \"traffic without a flight plan over the Gulf of Finland.\"<\/strong> The Spanish Eurofighters completed their mission successfully and recognized the aircraft in question as <strong>a Tupolev Tu-154 personnel transport aircraft<\/strong>, a photo of which has not been published by the EMAD. <em>\"Subsequently, <strong>the CAOC-U ordered to recognize unknown traffic in the same area<\/strong>, which turned out to be a surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft, of Russian nationality, model <strong>Ilyushin IL-20<\/strong>.\"<\/em> This aircraft was the RF-75931 (c\/n 176011707), also operated by the Russian Air Force. We can see its photo above these lines. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/08\/26\/wave-of-interceptions-of-russian-il-20-spy-planes-by-american-f-16s-in-the-alaskan-adiz\/\">It is the same type of spy plane intercepted several times by USAF F-16s in the Alaskan ADIZ in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54791958351_1499df4b4e_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54791958351_85cb710b27_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>On September 10, the Vilkas Detachment received two Alpha Scrambles:<\/strong> <em>\"In the morning, by an unidentified object, with <strong>a flight profile similar to that of drones, over Lithuanian territory<\/strong>. In the evening, by another object that penetrated <strong>Latvian airspace<\/strong>. In both cases, contact with the objects was lost before the fighters reached the affected area,\"<\/em> notes the EMAD. Let us remember that <strong>that same day Russia launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/09\/10\/poland-points-out-that-russian-drones-repeatedly-violated-polish-airspace\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and several of them ended up penetrating Polish airspace<\/a>, some being shot down by allied fighters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54792207169_52d97f402b_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54792207169_3b624b74be_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the EMAD notes that \"<strong>on the afternoon of September 13, the Spanish Eurofighters took off again to reconnoitre a track that, coming from Kaliningrad, had no communications<\/strong> with the air traffic control services. Once the recognition of the object was carried out, <strong>the C16s confirmed that it corresponded to the Russian TU-154<\/strong> that appeared in the flight plan\".
