Furthermore, in its Article 55, the charter affirmed a commitment to promote "universal respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion."

However, the word "democracy" does not appear in the entire text. In fact, the UN betrayed the meaning of that charter from its first day, since it admitted among its founders several dictatorships, including the Soviet Union, then ruled by the genocidal Stalin and which was also represented in a triple manner, with one seat for the USSR and two others for countries occupied by it: Belarus and Ukraine.

The UN also admitted among its founders the communist dictatorship established by Stalin in Poland, an anti-democratic regime that condemned many Poles who had fought against the Nazis to exile, imprisonment and even death, simply for being loyal to the legitimate government of Poland, exiled in London since the German-Soviet invasion in 1939.

This original flaw explains many of the inexplicable things the UN has done in these 80 years, betraying the principles on which it was founded. This Friday, Canadian lawyer Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, a human rights NGO founded in 1993 and based in Switzerland that monitors UN activity, published a list of condemnations issued by the UN General Assembly, details of which are available on the UN Watch website. For better understanding, I will divide this list between democracies, on the one hand, and dictatorships and hybrid regimes, on the other (to distinguish them I rely on The Economist Democracy Index):

<big2>Democracies:</big2>

🇮🇱 Israel: 173

🇺🇸 United States: 11

<big2>Dictatorships and hybrids:</big2>

🇷🇺 Russia: 29

🇸🇾 Syria: 12

🇰🇵 North Korea: 10

🇮🇷 Iran: 10

🇲🇲 Myanmar: 9

🇦🇫 Afghanistan: 1

🇨🇳 Communist China: 0

🇨🇺 Cuba: 0

🇻🇪 Venezuela: 0

🇮🇶 Iraq: 0

🇵🇰 Pakistan: 0

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia: 0

🇶🇦 Qatar: 0

🇩🇿 Algeria: 0

🇹🇷 Turkey: 0

Neuer also points out that the UN has not issued a single condemnation of the terrorist organization Hamas, which on October 7, 2023, perpetrated the largest anti-Semitic massacre since the Holocaust.

The reason for this bias is obvious: Many UN members are Islamic countries openly hostile to Israel. That's why a democratic country like this has received such a disproportionate number of condemnations. What credibility can an organization have that admits dictatorships and exhibits such blatant bias?

---

Photo: Patrick Gruban.
