This station was insufficient to prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trove.scot\/place\/125912#activities\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sinking of the steam sloop Martello on Carr Rocks in the Firth of Forth on 28 November 1857<\/a>, on a night of bad weather and poor visibility, an accident in which, fortunately, the crew and passengers managed to save their lives.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54827389366_aa285d248b_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54827389366_7d69f43f0c_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The lighthouse in June 2024 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=767295452246143&set=a.247291440913216\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St Abb's Head National Nature Reserve NTS<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>Following the accident, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlb.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB)<\/a>, the authority responsible for managing maritime lighthouses in Scotland and the Isle of Man, recommended the construction of a lighthouse high on the cliffs of St Abbs Head. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlb.org.uk\/lighthouses\/st-abbs-head\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">According to the NLB<\/a>, <strong>the lighthouse was built by engineers David and Thomas Stevenson and the light was first lit on 24 February 1862<\/strong>. <em>\"The original oil burning light was converted to incandescent in 1906 and to electric operation in 1966.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54827657788_dcb9135737_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54827657788_03571ece71_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">La linterna del faro de St Abbs Head (Foto: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlb.org.uk\/lighthouses\/st-abbs-head\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northern Lighthouse Board<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>In 1876 the lighthouse was fitted with<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2017\/11\/09\/this-is-how-a-foghorn-sounds\/\">a foghorn<\/a>, the first one installed in Scotland. It was in service until 1987 and is still in use today. A radio beacon was also added to the lighthouse's services in 1961. The cliffs at St Abbs Head reach a maximum height of 91 metres. <strong>The lighthouse is at an altitude of 68 metres and its small tower is only 9 metres high<\/strong>, an atypical design due to the great height at which it was built.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54826540682_8bb1ed0e3f_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54826540682_8ffdcc6338_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The lighthouse and its foghorn (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StAbbsVisitor\/status\/1135533137994375171\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St Abbs Visitor Centre<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>This lighthouse has a curious shape.<\/strong> It is located at the end of a flight of stairs that descend from the lighthouse keeper's house. <strong>This lighthouse was automated in 1993<\/strong> and part of the lighthouse keeper's house has been sold. <strong>Its light is white, has a range of 18 nautical miles and flashes every 10 seconds.<\/strong> Its coordinates are 55\u00b054.979'N 002\u00b008.286'W.
