{"id":61312,"date":"2025-10-19T20:19:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-19T18:19:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=61312"},"modified":"2025-10-26T22:46:31","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T21:46:31","slug":"an-official-magazine-of-the-ministry-of-defense-spain-will-be-left-without-embarked-fixed-wing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/10\/19\/an-official-magazine-of-the-ministry-of-defense-spain-will-be-left-without-embarked-fixed-wing\/","title":{"rendered":"An official magazine of the Ministry of Defense: \u201cSpain will be left without embarked fixed-wing\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/08\/10\/those-responsible-for-the-spanish-navy-losing-its-carrier-based-fighters\/\">The Spanish government's refusal to purchase the F-35B<\/a> will have very negative consequences for the Spanish Navy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/08\/10\/those-responsible-for-the-spanish-navy-losing-its-carrier-based-fighters\/\">Those responsible for the Spanish Navy losing its carrier-based fighters<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/07\/08\/the-french-naval-model-that-spain-could-imitate-and-that-would-mean-forgetting-about-the-f-35b\/\">The French naval model that Spain could imitate and that would mean forgetting about the F-35B<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><big>The rejection of the F-35B will leave the Spanish Navy without fighters in a few years<\/big><\/p>\n<p>In August <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/08\/10\/those-responsible-for-the-spanish-navy-losing-its-carrier-based-fighters\/\">you could already read those consequences in Defense and Aviation: Spain will be left without carrier-based fighters<\/a>, as there is no replacement in time for the EAV-8B+ Harrier II Plus of the 9th Squadron before the end of its operational life. <strong>It was predictable given the government's position on the F-35B<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/10\/31\/the-commander-of-the-aircraft-flotilla-of-the-spanish-navy-speaks-clearly-about-the-f-35\/\">ignoring the Navy's requests regarding that aircraft<\/a>. But in case some people still didn't have it clear, now an official publication confirms it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4230\/34258725374_47380b783e_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4230\/34258725374_2e0ff4ca69_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Spanish EAV-8B+ Harrier II fighter, the VA.1B-26 (01-916), of the 9th Squadron of the Navy's Aircraft Flotilla parked on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier \"Juan Carlos I\" L-61 during a visit to Vigo in June 2017 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/34258725374\/in\/photostream\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elentir<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><big>A Defense Ministry magazine confirms: \u201cSpain will be left without embarked fixed-wing\u201d<\/big><\/p>\n<p>This Saturday, the Ministry of Defense <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Defensagob\/status\/1979593308709011578\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> the publication of <a href=\"https:\/\/publicaciones.defensa.gob.es\/media\/downloadable\/files\/links\/r\/a\/raa-946.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new issue of its \"Revista de Aeron\u00e1utica y Astron\u00e1utica\" (see PDF)<\/a>, <strong>directed by an Air Force Colonel<\/strong> and whose editorial board is made up of officers from our air force. <strong>This is a publication that addresses current issues on aeronautical topics<\/strong>, both from Spain and other countries.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51757281256_0e5d80c9eb_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51757281256_04f8ef4524_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Two F-35B fighter jets from the U.S. Marine Corps' Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 211 during a visit to Rota Naval Base, Spain, November 30, 2021 (Photo: U.S. Navy photo \/ Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Jacob Owen).<\/div>\n<p>In this issue, 946 of that official publication of the Ministry of Defense, corresponding to October 2025, <strong>the news about the government's decision to rule out the purchase of the F-35 appears on page 745<\/strong>, in a text that begins like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\"According to government sources, <strong>the purchase of the F-35 aircraft is currently ruled out as it is not a priority<\/strong>. This was communicated to the media by Defense Minister Margarita Robles, who reaffirmed that <strong>this government will concentrate its resources on systems such as the Eurofighter and the FCAS,<\/strong> supporting the European option in its investments if possible, <strong>although the FCAS is not scheduled to enter service until after 2040<\/strong>.\"<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The editorial staff appears to disapprove of the government's decision<\/strong>, warning about the FCAS's delay. The following makes clear <strong>the magazine's negative assessment of the decision:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\"<strong>The decision is also contextualized in a climate of tension with Washington<\/strong>, derived from criticism from the Trump administration towards Spain for its level of military spending and <strong>the most immediate consequence will be suffered by the Navy<\/strong> by not having a replacement for the Harriers AV-8B+ that operate from the ship Juan Carlos I. As a consequence <strong>Spain will be left without an embarked fixed wing and the Navy without its capacity to project naval power over land as an essential part of its combat capability<\/strong>\".<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><big>The operating costs of the Harrier II will make it unviable after \u201cthree or four years\u201d<\/big><\/p>\n<p><strong>This analysis is devastating of the government's plans and reveals the discontent of our military<\/strong> (always very measured in their expression) over a decision that implies a loss of an important capability of the Spanish Navy. <strong>But the devastating analysis doesn't stop there. The article goes on to say this:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\"In the next three or four years, when the Italian Navy and the US Marine Corps retire their last Harrier II+ units, <strong>the maintenance costs for Spain of a fleet of only 11 units will make the operation of this aircraft unviable<\/strong>.\"<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This statement contradicts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infodefensa.com\/texto-diario\/mostrar\/5438190\/armada-planea-alargar-vida-aviones-harrier-hasta-2032-ayuda-airbus\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Navy's plans to continue operating the Harrier II until 2023<\/a>, plans that were announced a month ago and which <strong>would be based on the purchase of fighters of this type from the US and Italy to obtain spare parts<\/strong> for the Spanish aircraft.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53691299247_79964a6476_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53691299247_31da979b75_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">EAV-8B+ Harrier II Plus fighters of the Spanish Navy operating from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier \"Juan Carlos I\" L-61 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/STRIKFORNATO\/status\/1785289952118427756\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\">STRIKFORNATO<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><big>The uncertain future of the FCAS, the alternative to which the Spanish Navy is clinging<\/big><\/p>\n<p>The magazine's report ends with these words, which refer to the alternative that the Spanish Navy is considering to recover this lost fixed-wing aircraft: <em>\"For the moment, <strong>the Navy has reconsidered its long-term strategy, opting for the construction of a new conventional aircraft carrier<\/strong>, a project that is already being studied for feasibility by Navantia.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54748844619_087c351219_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54748844619_8752b767a3_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">An artist's impression of the FCAS, a sixth-generation fighter project being developed by Germany, France, and Spain (Image: EMAD).<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/06\/25\/spain-plans-its-first-aircraft-carrier-capable-of-operating-us-style-catobar-fighters\/\">We already wrote about this here on June 25<\/a>, but significantly, <strong>the government's silence on this project is the same as it has maintained until recently on the F-35B<\/strong>. Even if the government were to approve the construction of such an aircraft carrier, <strong>it would possibly be a decade after the retirement of the Harrier IIs until Spain had a naval version of the FCAS<\/strong>, provided there are no delays in the program, delays that are already common in many defense programs in which Spain is involved.
