The Republic of Ireland is a neutral country. It does not belong to NATO, but it does belong to the European Union, and <strong>benefits from the protection of the powerful armed forces of its British neighbors<\/strong> and from the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/05\/19\/comienza-la-primera-cumbre-ue-reino-unido-con-acuerdos-sobre-pesca-y-defensa-tras-las-conv\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">defense agreement signed between the United Kingdom and the European Union in 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54891029099_c474b277f3_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54891029099_41b02f4e75_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The C295W MTA 286 is the Irish Air Corps' only tactical transport aircraft of its type. (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DefenceForces\/posts\/pfbid02WeQRsC65inRAG3gY3CfwSgpBHtoZVFCJVeNSqhEuqZEMqhyCb1KPQ462kk53gfCyl\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00d3glaigh na h\u00c9ireann<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The largest aircraft in the Irish Air Corps is only 24.5 meters long and is a Spanish aircraft: the Airbus C295<\/strong>, originally designed by the Spanish company Construcciones Aeron\u00e1uticas S.A. (CASA). <strong>Ireland has three of these aircraft: two C295W MSA maritime patrol aircraft<\/strong>, numbers 284 and 285 (acquired in 2019 and both delivered in 2023), <strong>and one C295W MTA tactical transport aircraft<\/strong>, number 286 (acquired in 2022 and delivered on October 7, 2025).<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54891013183_8fbbc8b5df_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54891013183_f9afb2c152_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The Irish Air Corps' first C295W MSA, the 284th, upon its arrival in Ireland on June 27, 2023, with a Spanish flag, a temporary registration, and Irish military symbols still covered (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dfmagazine\/53019973330\/in\/album-72177720309507226\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00d3glaigh na h\u00c9ireann<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>These three aircraft are operated by 101 Squadron<\/strong>, based at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, west of Dublin. <strong>The two C295W MSAs received in 2023 replaced two other Spanish aircraft<\/strong>, specifically CASA CN235-100MP Persuaders, received in 1994 and upgraded between 2006 and 2007. The three Irish C295Ws were manufactured at the Airbus factory in Seville, Spain.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54891079225_d61abbfa96_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54891079225_654d02f258_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">In 2023, Airbus delivered two C295W MSA maritime surveillance aircraft to Ireland, both acquired in 2019 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dfmagazine\/53019580281\/in\/album-72177720309507226\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00d3glaigh na h\u00c9ireann<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Outwardly, all Irish Air Corps C295s look very similar.<\/strong> They have a glossy dark gray livery, with the inscription \"Irish Air Corps\" in black letters on the front of the fuselage, <strong>the Irish roundel (since 1954 it has been in the shape of a Celtic triskelion) on the tail and the flag of the Republic of Ireland on the tail fin<\/strong>, with the aircraft's identification number slightly below.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54891079260_74bcc26ab1_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54891079260_102e53d383_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The C295W MSA 284 was the first aircraft of this type received by the Irish Air Corps.
