It was armed with four 12.7 mm Colt-Browning MG53-2 machine guns and a 20 mm Hispano-Suiza HS.404 autocannon. <strong>This armament position allowed for forward firing and saved ground personnel many hours of work<\/strong> spent aligning the machine guns.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52227397161_f502a74328_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52227397161_fb3845b32d_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A P-38J-10-LO Lightning fighter of the United States Army Air Forces (42-68008) flying over California in 1944 (Photo: U.S. Air Force).<\/div>\n<p><strong>The P-38 was designed by American aeronautical engineer Kelly Johnson<\/strong>, one of the most famous names in American aviation for his innovative designs. <strong>Among his creations are the Lockheed U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird spy planes<\/strong>, two other legendary models in aviation history. After a development not without its problems, <strong>the P-38 entered service in July 1941<\/strong> with the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). <strong>Between 1941 and 1945, 10,037 P-38s were built<\/strong>, serving as long-range fighters, fighter-bombers, and reconnaissance aircraft.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53091310111_1da774d081_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53091310111_1da774d081_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A computer-generated recreation of the P-38G 147 \"Miss Virginia\", the fighter with which Lieutenant Rex T. Barber shot down the plane carrying Yamamoto (Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/live.warthunder.com\/post\/639059\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gruffman<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>On April 18, 1943, <strong>the P-38 carried out one of the most famous fighter missions of World War II:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/08\/03\/the-fighter-that-killed-the-mastermind-of-the-attack-on-pearl-harbor-in-a-top-secret-mission\/\">the downing of the aircraft carrying Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto<\/a>, the mastermind behind the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. <strong>The mission was entrusted to 18 P-38Gs under the command of Major John W. Mitchell.<\/strong> The P-38G 147 \"Miss Virginia\", piloted by Lieutenant Rex T. Barber, which managed to shoot down the plane carrying the Japanese admiral on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/08\/18\/balalae-aeronautical-relics-of-the-world-war-ii-in-an-airfield-with-a-macabre-past\/\">the island of Balalae, in the Solomon Islands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54900934449_54bb73f7e1_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54900934449_496e85a0f6_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The P-38J 23 Skidoo (44-23314), belonging to the Air Force's Planes of Fame, based in Chino, California, is one of only 10 P-38s still airworthy. (Photo: U.S. Marine Corps).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Retired from service in 1949 by the US Air Force<\/strong>, the P-38 continued flying with other air forces until its final retirement in 1965, when the Honduran Air Force decommissioned its last examples. <strong>Today, only 26 P-38s remain, of which only 10 are airworthy.<\/strong> Even today, it remains an amazing and admirable aircraft.
