{"id":61779,"date":"2025-11-10T23:18:41","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T22:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=61779"},"modified":"2025-11-18T21:57:39","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T20:57:39","slug":"the-air-power-of-the-united-states-marine-corps-on-its-250th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/11\/10\/the-air-power-of-the-united-states-marine-corps-on-its-250th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"The air power of the United States Marine Corps on its 250th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States Marine Corps (USMC) celebrates its 250th anniversary today, a milestone with a rich history behind it.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/08\/24\/a-rare-formation-flight-of-an-f-35b-stealth-fighter-and-two-harrier-ii-plus\/\">A rare formation flight of an F-35B stealth fighter and two Harrier II Plus<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/11\/10\/the-us-marine-corps-shows-off-some-of-its-aircraft-in-a-spectacular-video\/\">The US Marine Corps shows off some of its aircraft in a spectacular video<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>The Marines are known for being the first to fight wherever the United States launches an operation. <strong>Their combat record is filled with many pages of valor and heroism on land, at sea, and in the air<\/strong>, as their soldiers have demonstrated in numerous wars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54915249528_eb0744c1eb_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54915249528_23dd77cdc7_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Marine Corps Aviation (USMCA) was founded on May 22, 1912.<\/strong> Today, the USMC's air power surpasses that of many air forces, and its power projection capabilities are far greater than most of them thanks to the US Navy's ships. <strong>It currently consists of four Aircraft Wings<\/strong> with their main bases in Okinawa (Japan), Cherry Point (North Carolina), Miramar (California), and New Orleans (Louisiana). <strong>Let's review some of its aircraft here.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53262800996_fb460c88fd_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53262800996_e716f0a1fe_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>F-35 Lightning II<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>Today the F-35 is the USMC's most modern fighter jet<\/strong>. The Marines are scheduled to receive 280 F-35Bs (short takeoff and vertical landing) to operate from LHDs, and 140 F-35Cs to operate from CATOBAR aircraft carriers. <strong>The USMC currently has 18 F-35 squadrons<\/strong>, 11 of which are fleet squadrons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54914231042_97e9d5ff19_5k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54914231042_7a55f64016_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>F\/A-18 Legacy Hornet<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>The USMC still has 186 F\/A-18 Hornets of the A and C versions (single-seat) and 46 of the B and D versions (two-seat).<\/strong> Known as \"Legacy Hornets\" to distinguish them from the Super Hornets used by the Navy, they are being replaced by F-35Cs. <strong>The USMC's Legacy Hornets are distributed among 5 squadrons<\/strong>, 4 of which are fleet squadrons and 1 training squadron.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54130212251_3d2602a989_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54130212251_ec02cf1e66_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>AV-8B+ Harrier II Plus<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>The USMC now has only one active Harrier II Plus squadron, VMA-223 \"Bulldogs,\" with about 20 aircraft.<\/strong> Its aircraft are scheduled to be retired from service in 2026. These aircraft are being replaced by the F-35B.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54914256302_d6b5bb8872_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54914256302_62d89ec7f7_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>MQ-9A Reaper<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>The USMC expects to receive 14 MQ-9A Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles.<\/strong> They are divided into 3 squadrons, 2 of them for reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition, and the third for training.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53972805407_5d4744b018_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53972805407_d433137828_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>AH-1Z Viper<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>The USMC has 159 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters.<\/strong> They are the latest version in a long line of attack helicopters that began in the 1960s with the AH-1 Cobra. <strong>They are distributed among 9 squadrons<\/strong>, 8 of which are fleet squadrons and 1 training squadron.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53227186720_5b3be5482e_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53227186720_1d3c4571f0_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>UH-1Y Venom<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>The USMC has 160 UH-1Y Venom transport helicopters<\/strong>, the latest version of the famous UH-1 Huey from the 1960s. <strong>They are divided into 9 squadrons<\/strong>, 8 of them fleet squadrons and 1 training squadron.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54915283989_d0f274ed32_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54915283989_ef2d79606a_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>KC-130J Super Hercules<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>The USMC has 64 KC-130 Super Hercules tanker aircraft<\/strong>, which are used to support the Marine Corps' aircraft fleet. <strong>They are distributed among 5 refueling and transport squadrons.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53225808852_f82054327a_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53225808852_0cb066d8b5_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>CH-53E y CH-53K<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>The USMC currently operates 140 CH-53E Super Stallion heavy helicopters.<\/strong> This model is being replaced by the new CH-53K King Stallion, of which the USMC expects to receive 191 units. <strong>The USMC's CH-53Es are operated by seven squadrons<\/strong>, six of which are fleet squadrons and one is a training squadron. In addition, <strong>there is already one active CH-53K squadron.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54303298373_73487823da_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54303298373_75420157df_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>MV-22B Osprey<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>The USMC currently operates 289 MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft<\/strong>, dedicated to transport duties. These aircraft are operated by <strong>18 squadrons<\/strong>, 17 of which are fleet squadrons and 1 training squadron.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54914417722_740e4555ce_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54914417722_880cfa9e42_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>F-5E Tiger II<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><strong>The USMC uses 12 F-5E Tiger IIs as aggressor aircraft<\/strong> for fighter pilot training. They are divided into two squadrons: VMFT-401 \"Snipers\" from Yuma, Arizona, and VMFT-402 \"Grim Reapers\" from Beaufort, South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53935456017_05300cd5a4_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53935456017_05300cd5a4_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>VH-3D Sea King<\/big2><\/p>\n<p>The USMCA has several aircraft dedicated to transport duties. The most famous are <strong>the VH-3D Sea King presidential helicopters operated by the HMX-1 squadron<\/strong> from Quantico, Virginia. These helicopters regularly fly to the White House to transport the President of the United States. <strong>The HMX-1 still has seven of these helicopters in active service.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53936608598_ef3d9b5e27_b.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53936608598_ef3d9b5e27_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>VH-92A Patriot<\/big2><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/08\/20\/the-problems-of-the-vh-92a-patriot-the-new-us-marine-one-presidential-helicopter\/\">The SH-3D presidential helicopters of HMX-1 are being replaced by VH-92A Patriots<\/a>. The USMC plans to operate 23 of these helicopters for presidential transport.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53936608613_796a53037b_b.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53936608613_796a53037b_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><big2>VH-60N White Hawk<\/big2><\/p>\n<p>The only variant of the famous UH-60 Black Hawk used by the USMC is <strong>the VH-60N White Hawk executive transport helicopter<\/strong>.
