{"id":61820,"date":"2025-11-12T21:42:43","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T20:42:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=61820"},"modified":"2025-11-20T23:04:55","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T22:04:55","slug":"images-of-american-military-helicopters-in-the-hands-of-the-taliban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/11\/12\/images-of-american-military-helicopters-in-the-hands-of-the-taliban\/","title":{"rendered":"Images of American military helicopters in the hands of the Taliban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After military operations are carried out in a country, armies often leave a lot of equipment behind.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/08\/31\/the-old-ch-46-sea-knight-helicopters-that-the-united-states-has-abandoned-in-kabul\/\">The old CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters that the United States has abandoned in Kabul<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/09\/03\/this-is-how-the-us-marines-disabled-the-military-vehicles-they-left-in-kabul\/\">This is how the US Marines disabled the military vehicles they left in Kabul<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>That was what happened during <strong>the Western withdrawal from Afghanistan in the summer of 2021<\/strong>, a disastrous retreat ordered by then-US President Joe Biden, which <strong>left valuable military equipment in the hands of the Taliban<\/strong>, a criminal group made up of Islamic extremists who treat women with particular cruelty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919735576_c25fc91b69_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919735576_80048714cd_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today, <strong>the Taliban have established an Islamist dictatorship in that country, officially called the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan<\/strong>. Like the Hamas terrorists in Gaza, the Taliban have formed <strong>a government that includes a \"ministry of national defense\"<\/strong> which has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MoDAfghanistan2\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Twitter channel<\/a> where it has been posting images of its personnel and equipment for months.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919735661_dd12a43903_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919735661_7878afed0d_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among the photos published by that Taliban ministry, <strong>the use of American Woodland camouflage uniforms by these Islamists is striking<\/strong>. Although outdated in most Western armies for years, it remains a good camouflage pattern and <strong>is available in commercial stores, including some Chinese suppliers<\/strong>. It's not hard to imagine how the Taliban acquired this material. Otherwise, aside from the pitiful appearance of most of their \"soldiers,\" <strong>the Taliban seem to have equipped their \"special forces\" (above) very well<\/strong> carrying Western equipment and American M-4 carbines, likely left behind during the 2021 withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54918873862_bc582fb620_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54918873862_9a5f9858f8_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It has been known for four years that <strong>the Taliban have acquired many Western military vehicles<\/strong>, including the famous American Humvee tactical vehicles (pictured above), as well as mine-resistant trucks and MRAPs. <strong>The Taliban also possess some T-55 and T-62 tanks, as well as other armored vehicles of Soviet origin<\/strong>, perhaps left behind by the USSR during the invasion of the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54918873837_e5240e3f32_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54918873837_86311dfeae_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The most regrettable thing is seeing images of <strong>American-made military helicopters operating with the Taliban \"air force\"<\/strong>. The US military left behind various types of helicopters, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/08\/31\/the-old-ch-46-sea-knight-helicopters-that-the-united-states-has-abandoned-in-kabul\/\">some CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters operated by the State Department<\/a>. In addition, the Taliban seized some Afghan Air Force aircraft that were not evacuated, including <strong>Hughes MD-530F Defender light helicopters<\/strong> (pictured above next to a Soviet-made Mil Mi-17), <strong>Embraer A-29 Super Tucano<\/strong> turboprop aircraft manufactured in Brazil and purchased by the US for the former Afghan government, and also some <strong>UH-60A Black Hawk helicopters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919948908_f390bdb1d8_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919948908_afd5c3b93e_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to \"The Military Balance 2024\" by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, <strong>the Taliban possess eight MD-530F Defender light helicopters and four UH-60A Black Hawk medium helicopters<\/strong>. This equipment was sabotaged during the Western withdrawal from Afghanistan, but apparently the country's new rulers have acquired the means to put it back into service.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986299_d29b1c9965_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986299_876bfbffb6_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Images released by the Taliban government in recent months include <strong>MD-530F helicopters armed with Hydra 70 rocket launchers<\/strong>, each capable of firing seven rockets. Some images show these helicopters firing these weapons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986274_a302370dba_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986274_aea234e8f2_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the images published by the Taliban we can see the MD-530Fs with numbers 285, 292 and 294<\/strong>, all of them armed with rocket launchers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986359_7aa76143c6_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986359_89935a5ce4_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Regarding the UH-60As, two units are visible in the images, numbered 0-23582 and 0-23716.<\/strong> In June of this year, the Ukrainian website <a href=\"https:\/\/militarnyi.com\/en\/news\/the-taliban-have-managed-to-restore-some-of-the-uh-60a-black-hawks-disabled-by-the-americans\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Militarynyi.com published the serial numbers of seven other UH-60As in the hands of the Taliban<\/a>, so they could currently have at least nine operational UH-60As.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986349_5e706fd1e6_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986349_3378399676_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the released images we can see <strong>Taliban fighters practicing fast-rope descents with these helicopters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986379_957cd0839b_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919986379_c9a2f65a36_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The images also include U<strong>H-60A crew members wearing Gentex HGU-56\/P helmets and maxillofacial masks<\/strong>, equipment used by Black Hawk crews from the United States and other countries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919948798_8a0cef48ce_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54919948798_94efc95d89_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>It's sad to see this military equipment in such bad hands.<\/strong> What we're seeing is a consequence of the disorganized withdrawal in 2021, but also of a way of conducting operations that doesn't seem to take into account that leaving military equipment behind, as the United States does repeatedly, ends up having these effects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After military operations are carried out in a country, armies often leave a lot of equipment behind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[19534,11546],"tags":[12300,24840,8193,25233,25709,2658,22949,6182,15376],"class_list":["post-61820","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-defense-portada-eng","category-military-aviation","tag-afghanistan","tag-embraer-a-29-super-tucano","tag-humvee","tag-hydra-70","tag-islamic-emirate-of-afghanistan","tag-joe-biden","tag-mcdonnell-douglas-md-500-defender","tag-sikorsky-uh-60-black-hawk","tag-taliban"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/61820"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=61820"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/61820\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=61820"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=61820"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=61820"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
