{"id":61881,"date":"2025-11-14T23:41:31","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T22:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=61881"},"modified":"2025-11-27T23:15:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T22:15:32","slug":"blue-origins-great-success-with-the-vertical-landing-of-its-new-glenn-rocket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/11\/14\/blue-origins-great-success-with-the-vertical-landing-of-its-new-glenn-rocket\/","title":{"rendered":"Blue Origin's great success with the vertical landing of its New Glenn rocket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, the space race has achieved a new success with the second company to achieve a reusable rocket capable of landing.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/10\/24\/the-starship-ift-5-launch-and-the-booster-12-return-shown-as-a-movie\/\">The Starship IFT-5 launch and the Booster 12 return shown as a movie<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/10\/08\/the-launch-of-the-miura-1-the-first-spanish-space-rocket-from-different-angles\/\">The launch of the Miura 1, the first Spanish space rocket, from different angles<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>The first vertical landing of a rocket was a milestone achieved by Elon Musk's SpaceX<\/strong> in December 2015, almost ten years ago, with a Falcon 9 rocket. <strong>Since then, no other company or space agency had achieved this.<\/strong> Until now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54924314554_e4dfdda532_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54924314554_d489c45564_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This Thursday, November 13, <strong>Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin finally achieved this feat.<\/strong> It did so with the first stage of its <strong>New Glenn rocket<\/strong>, named after John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54924369110_c5672054ef_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54924369110_6e5cd5b109_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The first flight of the New Glenn, NG-1, took place on January 16, 2025, at 7:03 UTC<\/strong> from the United States Space Force Station at Cape Canaveral (CCSFS), Florida. <strong>On that occasion, the first stage was lost during descent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54923194932_ce9d347f63_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54923194932_a22c457579_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The second flight of the New Glen, the NG-2, began at 20:55 UTC on Thursday, November 13<\/strong> with the launch of the rocket from the CCSFS LC-36 platform.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54923194977_ce99a13c90_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54923194977_ce99a13c90_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The rocket successfully deployed two twin spacecraft, nicknamed Blue and Gold<\/strong>, into their designated waiting orbit. These spacecraft, part of NASA's Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers (ESPACADE) program, <strong>are designed to explore the magnetosphere of Mars.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54924065376_c4072a9372_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54924065376_50e584d38c_h.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A few minutes after liftoff, <strong>the rocket's first stage successfully landed vertically on Blue Origin's Jacklyn barge<\/strong>. This moment was met with euphoria at Blue Origin flight control.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54924369130_49a9b77872_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54924369130_4c59ee39af_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>You can watch the video of the flight broadcast here.<\/strong> I've set it to start at the moment the final countdown began (1:43:07 in the video). <strong>At 1:51:49 in the video, we see the first-stage engines ignite for landing.<\/strong> The spacecraft touches down at 1:52:34 in the video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ecfxcTEl-1I?si=bUo89TtTtr3Gx-jW&amp;start=6187\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unfortunately, the landing footage wasn't very good.<\/strong> There were transmission failures and the signal was interrupted at times. <strong>This is something Blue Origin will need to improve<\/strong>, as a significant part of the space race is the opportunity to witness it with the technology available today.
