It seems that all the charlatans in the world have agreed to demand that Spain apologize for the most ridiculous reasons.<\/p>\n
A few years ago, the Mexican left started this practice by demanding that the King of Spain apologize for the conquest of Mexico<\/a>. It's just as foolish as if someone were to demand an apology from the Mexican government for the atrocious crimes committed by the Aztecs against other peoples of pre-Columbian America. These absurdities are the kind of things nationalism uses to pit sister nations against each other and distract from real problems<\/strong>, which in Mexico's case are numerous and have been increasing precisely because of the left, as is the case with drug-related crimes.<\/p>\n On this side of the Atlantic, Basque nationalism has also embraced these charlatan speeches<\/strong>. Yesterday, on the occasion of the visit of the King of Spain and the President of Germany to Guernica, where they paid tribute to the victims of the infamous bombing carried out during the Spanish Civil War by German airmen of the Condor Legion, the PNV separatists stated<\/a>: \"The Spanish State should apologize for the bombing of Guernica<\/strong>. It is incomprehensible that Felipe VI attends as a mere companion when it was Franco who established the monarchy.\"<\/em><\/p>\n In light of this absurd claim, it is necessary to remember that Felipe VI was born in 1968.<\/strong> Therefore, his responsibility for crimes committed during the Spanish Civil War is nil. In fact, neither side in that war was under the rule of the Spanish Crown<\/strong>, as the Second Republic had been established in 1931 and the Monarchy was not restored until 1975. Demanding that Felipe VI apologize for events that occurred before he was born is as absurd as demanding that Giorgia Meloni apologize for the Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula<\/strong>, in which the invaders also committed numerous abuses.<\/p>\n The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) certainly has reasons to apologize for some things. For example, for its negotiations with the Nazis during World War II<\/a> so that Hitler would support a hypothetical independence of the Basque provinces<\/strong> if the Third Reich won World War II. These were the same Nazis who had bombed Guernica<\/strong>, which gives an idea of \u200b\u200bhow quickly the PNV forgot about that attack. This is an issue on which the PNV has not made even the slightest act of contrition.<\/p>\n Furthermore, the PNV continues to glorify its founder, Sabino Arana<\/strong>, a fanatic who fomented hatred against the rest of Spain for racist reasons<\/a>, a hateful discourse expressed in statements that should shame any democrat today. This hatred of Spain fueled ETA terrorism years later<\/strong>, a criminal organization with which the PNV signed a separatist pact in August 1998<\/a> with the aim of breaking up Spain.<\/p>\n Before the signing of that pact, ETA had already perpetrated hundreds of murders<\/strong>, including babies and children among its victims. That same year, ETA murdered three city councilors from the People's Party (one of whom was shot along with his wife, and the last was killed by a bomb two months before the pact), a councilor from the Navarrese People's Union, and a retired Civil Guard officer. The PNV had no qualms about making a pact with murderers to break up Spain<\/strong>, and now it still has the audacity to ask Spain, through its King, to apologize.<\/p>\n Will the PNV apologize for the 853 murders committed by Basque separatism through its armed wing, the terrorist group ETA?<\/strong> Will it apologize for all the Spaniards from the Basque provinces and other regions who were murdered, wounded, maimed, threatened, extorted, and exiled by the campaign of terror waged by the gunmen of Basque separatism? There has been far more contact between ETA and the PNV than between Francoism and Felipe VI<\/strong>, who was just a child when Franco died. And certainly, millions of Spaniards, including many Basques, have reason to be fed up with Arana's separatist fanaticism and its bloody consequences<\/strong>, without having to endure victimhood narratives from the fan club of that racist madman.<\/p>\n ---<\/p>\n Photo: Efe.
