This week, the UN passed a resolution demanding the return of the thousands of children kidnapped by Russia in its criminal invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The dictatorship of Vladimir Putin has kidnapped and deported some 19,500 Ukrainian children<\/a> - even babies<\/a> - since the beginning of the large-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. These kidnappings violate Article 49 of the<\/strong> Geneva Convention<\/a>, which states the following:<\/p>\n

\"Individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territory to the territory of the Occupying Power<\/strong> or to that of any other country, occupied or not, are prohibited, regardless of their motive.\"<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The resolution approved on December 3 by the UN General Assembly (can be read here<\/a>) \"demands that the Russian Federation ensure the immediate, safe and unconditional return of all Ukrainian children who have been forcibly transferred or deported.<\/strong>\"<\/em> <\/p>\n

According to the UN, the resolution was adopted by 91 votes in favor, 12 against, and 57 abstentions<\/a>. The vast majority of the countries that abstained are Islamic countries, although there are also communist dictatorships like China and Laos, and far-left governments like those of Brazil and Colombia. The 12 countries that voted against were<\/a> Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Sudan, Belarus, Eritrea, Nicaragua, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali.<\/strong> This list could have been longer, but Venezuela has its voting rights at the UN suspended<\/a> due to debts with the organization.<\/p>\n

According to The Economist's Democracy Index<\/a>, these 12 countries share a common characteristic: all 12 are authoritarian regimes.<\/strong> In fact, the vast majority of democratic countries voted in favor of the resolution. Looking at the countries that supported Russia and those that abstained, it is clear that the far left favors Russia for geopolitical reasons, since communist dictatorships are among the allies of Putin's regime<\/strong> \u2014a fact that certain politicians, media outlets, and analysts often overlook or simply ignore.<\/p>\n

Some people have been saying for years that Russia is a great hope in the face of a decadent West<\/strong>, presenting Putin's dictatorship as the model to follow for a society with Christian values, freer, more decent, and far removed from globalist ideology. Once again, reality shows us what these people are advocating: a dictatorship that kidnaps children<\/strong>, that murders unarmed civilians in Ukraine, that is committing brutal war crimes and crimes against humanity, a dictatorship that acts in a perverse and diabolical way and that has the support of other dictatorships.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Certainly, the West is experiencing a period of decline<\/strong>, and there are many things to reform and improve in democratic countries, but between living in dictatorships like Russia and its allies or living in a democratic country, my choice is very clear.<\/strong> Perhaps others feel more comfortable supporting a dictatorship where political corruption pervades everything and which has a habit of imprisoning or killing those who disagree with the political power<\/strong>. I will never understand the masochism of those who are fortunate enough to live in free countries, despite all the flaws those countries may have, and yet support a dictatorship like Putin's.<\/p>\n
