Over these four decades, <strong>USMC Harrier IIs have seen action in the Gulf War (1990), Yugoslavia (1999), Afghanistan (2001), Iraq (2003), and Libya (2011)<\/strong>, among other countries. It has been a highly valued aircraft among the Marines due to its high availability rates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986551364_93be6e41ab_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk4NjU1MTM2NCwiZSI6MTc2NTgyODg1NSwicyI6IjM0Yzg4MDUzMjI1MDQxODQ3YzI4NDFhYjBiZTQ4YjBlY2RiYzUxMGYiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986551364_6406499464_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Today, only one Marine squadron still flies the Harrier II: VMA-223 \"Bulldogs,\"<\/strong> a unit created in 1942 during World War II and based at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina. <strong>That squadron has been flying the Harrier II since 1987 and will retire them from service in September 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986580335_2d8c873599_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk4NjU4MDMzNSwiZSI6MTc2NTgyODg4MCwicyI6IjRlYjI4YTM0NDIyOWE1NWRhOWY5MjkwY2Y2NmE1Y2I5ZGVlMzk0YmYiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986580335_eae8c2abce_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite having less than a year until retirement, these veteran fighters are not idle. Since last summer, <strong>VMA-223 has been flying its Harrier IIs aboard its home ship, the amphibious aircraft carrier USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7)<\/strong>, in the Caribbean Sea. They are integrated into VMM-263, a unit of MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/articles\/c623nz0xe33o\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The USS Iwo Jima is currently one of 12 US Navy ships deployed in Operation Southern Spear<\/a> near Venezuela against drug trafficking by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/11\/16\/what-should-the-world-do-if-a-gang-of-drug-traffickers-takes-over-a-country\/\">Cartel of the Suns, a criminal organization embedded in the Nicol\u00e1s Maduro dictatorship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986300011_e638fbce27_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk4NjMwMDAxMSwiZSI6MTc2NTgyODkzMiwicyI6ImEwNjRjYWIzZmRmOTU4NDY0MWQ4Yjg2ODhkZWI3Y2M0Mzk1MDUxZTIiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986300011_7a35fea215_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/tags\/image\/harriers\/page\/1\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The multimedia portal DVIDShub.net has been publishing photos of these Harrier IIs aboard the USS Iwo Jima during its deployment in that area<\/a> (although they are publishing them weeks late, presumably for security reasons). The photos you see in this article correspond to that deployment. <strong>VMA-223 still has about 20 Harrier IIs in active service and everything indicates that they are preparing for their last war<\/strong>, if Donald Trump isn't bluffing and the United States Armed Forces finally take action on Venezuelan soil.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986300001_53fbf6da4c_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk4NjMwMDAwMSwiZSI6MTc2NTgyODk0OSwicyI6IjQ1ZmQ5OWIyMTgwMWU0ZDA3NzYxOWY1ODJhNjNjZjk5YTAzNzM5NGIiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986300001_1ba020a69e_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Despite its age, the Harrier II is an excellent close air support aircraft for amphibious operations<\/strong>, and although it has the more modern F-35B - a fifth-generation fighter with stealth technology that makes it almost invisible to enemy radar - <strong>it seems that the Marines have not wanted to leave aside their old workhorse in this new operation<\/strong>, which could include amphibious actions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986580325_fdfbbef8eb_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk4NjU4MDMyNSwiZSI6MTc2NTgyODk2NywicyI6ImFkZjk1NjdmY2NiNTI0ZTRhNmQ2MWVkOGJjNTM4ODFhNzRmYTMxMGQiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54986580325_3db7e779ff_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to being deployed on the USS Iwo Jima, <strong>the Harrier IIs of VMA-223 are using a base on the mainland:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/08\/18\/an-abandoned-md-82-in-puerto-rico-and-the-risks-of-exploring-without-proper-footwear\/\">the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, in Ceiba (Puerto Rico), which I talked about here last year<\/a> in an article on Explorando.info. This former base, abandoned since 2004, <a href=\"https:\/\/cnnespanol.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/18\/latinoamerica\/base-militar-puerto-rico-ceiba-roosevelt-orix\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was reactivated by the United States at the end of last summer<\/a> to host the deployment of military aircraft for Operation Southern Spear.
