{"id":62459,"date":"2025-12-17T21:42:01","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T20:42:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=62459"},"modified":"2025-12-26T22:00:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T21:00:19","slug":"the-portuguese-air-force-receives-its-first-five-a-29-super-tucano-attack-aircraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/12\/17\/the-portuguese-air-force-receives-its-first-five-a-29-super-tucano-attack-aircraft\/","title":{"rendered":"The Portuguese Air Force receives its first five A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This Wednesday, December 17, the Portuguese Air Force took an important step in its aircraft renewal program.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/07\/19\/portuguese-air-force-shows-off-its-first-a-29-super-tucano-attack-aircraft\/\">Portuguese Air Force shows off its first A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/10\/17\/portugal-shows-the-capabilities-of-its-kc-390-aircraft-by-carrying-a-black-hawk-helicopter\/\">Portugal shows the capabilities of its KC-390 aircraft by carrying a Black Hawk helicopter<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>The OGMA facilities at the Alverca Military Complex hosted today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emfa.pt\/noticia-5466-Entregues%20avi%C3%B5es%20A-29N%20Super%20Tucano\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the official handover ceremony of the first five A-29N Super Tucano aircraft for the Portuguese Air Force<a>. <strong>These aircraft will have a dual mission as a close air support system and a training platform for future pilots.<\/strong> The event was attended by the Minister of National Defense, Nuno Melo, and the Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Air Force, General Jo\u00e3o Cartaxo Alves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990787779_2c7aaaf237_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5MDc4Nzc3OSwiZSI6MTc2NjAwNjgwMywicyI6IjI3NGIzZGI2ZmEyOWUyZTI0MzllZTI4NzQwNzZiZGI1MjIzMTlmOTUiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990787779_a128632520_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>These five aircraft are the first of a fleet of twelve<\/strong>. The A-29Ns are equipped in NATO configuration. Portugal is the first European operator of this model and the first user worldwide of this version. <strong>The aircraft will be assigned to the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emfa.pt\/esquadra-48-esquadra-101-roncos\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Squadron 101 \"Roncos\"<\/a>, based in Beja, which has operated 16 Socata TB-30 Epsilon training aircraft since 1989, a French model assembled by OGMA in Portugal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990527131_84c0a7ee0c_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5MDUyNzEzMSwiZSI6MTc2NjAwNjgzMCwicyI6IjZjZDc3NzVkNzU4ZTA2ZjJlNGFiZTlhNmQ5Yjg2MTk3Njg1YTUyNGEiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990527131_4f82902f27_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Regarding the new A-29Ns, General Cartaxo stated: <em>\"<strong>The formal delivery of these aircraft represents another decisive step in the modernization of the Air Force,<\/strong> reinforcing its robustness and technological capabilities. In addition to replacing pilot training equipment that has been in operation for almost four decades, <strong>this acquisition also allows for the strengthening of new capabilities, particularly in close air support in joint or combined operations<\/strong>, guaranteeing the armed protection of ground forces. At the same time, <strong>the Air Force reaffirms its position as a leader among its counterparts, operating the first A-29N Super Tucano with NATO configuration<\/strong>, which guarantees Portugal a position of strategic advantage and a return on investment for the national economy.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990711598_493c47f675_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5MDcxMTU5OCwiZSI6MTc2NjAwNjg0NiwicyI6ImMwYzNiOTA3N2Y4NjAxYzE1ZjRhMjIzMWQwN2YyODNmZmFkMTA4MmQiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990711598_ca454eba4f_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Minister Nuno Melo highlighted the capabilities of the A-29N: <em>\"<strong>We are talking about a new, proven air-to-ground attack capability<\/strong> to support deployed national forces. But we are also talking about new scenarios. <strong>The Super Tucano now offers the possibility of carrying out anti-drone combat missions<\/strong>, which demonstrates the flexibility of the aircraft chosen by the Air Force. And I emphasize the phrase 'chosen by the Air Force,' with political decisions backed by technical opinions.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990711618_a99621860b_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5MDcxMTYxOCwiZSI6MTc2NjAwNjg3MCwicyI6ImU1NTUxY2UzMjM1ZDlmOTVmYmVjM2ZkMzdhMjM1ZDZlNTYwMjg2YTMiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990711618_80a710e77d_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the official delivery of these aircraft, <strong>the ceremony also included the signing of a letter of intent to establish an aircraft factory in Beja, capable of manufacturing the A-29N Super Tucano in Portugal<\/strong>, which, according to the Portuguese Air Force, will <em>\"generate skilled jobs that will benefit the Portuguese economy and industry. <strong>The aircraft produced on this assembly line are intended to meet the future needs of the Portuguese state, as well as other European nations<\/strong>, through intergovernmental negotiations, thus contributing to the strengthening of the defense industrial base in Portugal and Europe.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990823875_1d7c662ebe_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5MDgyMzg3NSwiZSI6MTc2NjAwNjg4OSwicyI6IjdlMTAzN2NjMmExZmE0M2VlOTRiZmJiMWU0Y2U3YTU4ZWZkODRjM2IiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990823875_9280dbe573_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/07\/19\/portuguese-air-force-shows-off-its-first-a-29-super-tucano-attack-aircraft\/\">As we already saw here in July<\/a>, <strong>the A-29N Super Tucano is manufactured by the Brazilian firm Embraer.<\/strong> Its main mission is light attack and counterinsurgency, for which <strong>it has Kevlar armor on its cockpit and fuselage<\/strong>. Embraer highlighted today that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embraer.com\/media-center\/en\/?mediatype=News&detail=23792-Embraer-delivers-first-A-29N-Super-Tucanos-to-the-Portuguese-Air-Force-and-announces-potential-assembly-line-in-Portugal\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Super Tucano has been selected by 22 air forces around the world<\/a> and has accumulated more than 600,000 flight hours.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990711593_6b701430d9_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5MDcxMTU5MywiZSI6MTc2NjAwNjkwNiwicyI6ImJjMWJmYjU5ODk1ZDI3Y2ZkYzkyOWUwYmMzYTM5ZDNjYTZjMzZkZWEiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990711593_3ac46c0b7a_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unlike other similar aircraft, such as the Pilatus PC-21 purchased by Spain for the General Air Academy, <strong>the A-29 is armed with two internal 12.7 mm FN Herstal machine guns, located in the wings<\/strong> (although the aircraft delivered to Portugal today do not appear to have them mounted), <strong>and can carry up to five weapon hardpoints<\/strong> (one ventral and four in the wings), on which it can load <strong>up to 1,550 kg of armament, including AIM-9 Sidewinder, MAA-1 Piranha, and Python 4 short-range air-to-air missiles<\/strong>, AGM-65 Maverick guided air-to-surface missiles, Mk.81 and Mk.82 conventional bombs, various types of laser-guided bombs, and 70 mm rocket launchers. It can also carry an AN\/AAQ-22 Star Safire II thermal imaging camera.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990787889_7f8fd0388d_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5MDc4Nzg4OSwiZSI6MTc2NjAwNjkyMSwicyI6ImJlNzI0NjNkOGFkMmEzMTY1MzQ3Zjc2Y2YzMjIyZmMyN2NmYjk0NzEiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54990787889_3e903c4804_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With this purchase, <strong>the Portuguese Air Force not only acquires attack and counter-drone capabilities, but also regains advanced training capabilities<\/strong>, which it has lacked since retiring its 50 Dassault\/Dornier Alpha Jet A aircraft, purchased secondhand from Germany in 1993. One advantage the new aircraft offers over these types of training jets is that <strong>the A-29 <em>\"can operate from unpaved runways in hostile environments without infrastructure,\"<\/em><\/strong> as highlighted by Embraer.
