I came across his work eight years ago, looking for an image for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2017\/02\/06\/si-crees-que-en-nuestra-sociedad-ya-no-hay-canibales-te-equivocas-estamos-rodeados\/\">an article<\/a> that some must have found as strange as his works.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773511_3bb5b85fee_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Nzc3MzUxMSwiZSI6MTc2NjM0ODk2MCwicyI6IjdlMGRjMDI2MWM5YWZlMWMwNGIxZTNhMTk3OWNmMzk4MDExMTdkMjciLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773511_c4dc26d3f0_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beksi\u0144ski was born on February 24, 1929, in Sanok, a small town in southeastern Poland.<\/strong> When he was ten years old, on September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded the western part of his country. On September 17, the Soviet Union invaded the eastern part. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/09\/03\/united-by-hatred-of-democracy-a-revealing-telegram-about-the-nazi-soviet-pact-of-1939\/\">Everything had been prearranged between the two dictatorships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54998032464_d12a055447_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5ODAzMjQ2NCwiZSI6MTc2NjM0ODk3OSwicyI6IjMwZjc2NDg3YjRhMjg2ZGRlNWFjOTQ5NjZiY2JhNTczM2M2Mjc1YWMiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54998032464_d78f8220df_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like many other Polish children, <strong>Beksi\u0144ski had to pursue his studies in secret<\/strong>, as the Germans banned education in Poland. <strong>The nazis considered Poles \"subhuman\"<\/strong> and refused to provide them with any schooling beyond the most basic level.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997945973_e345042b41_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Nzk0NTk3MywiZSI6MTc2NjM0ODk5OCwicyI6IjMxYjhiYTI1ZTBhYWFmZTJkM2FkNGNkN2YyYTI3ODIwODQzNjJmYjAiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997945973_7e8aa5bdfb_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the atrocities that all Poles witnessed during that war, the German invasion left an indelible mark on Beksi\u0144ski's body: <strong>he lost the index finger of his left hand and part of his thumb<\/strong> when he was playing with unexploded ordnance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886627_3afcb4d66e_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Njg4NjYyNywiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTA3NCwicyI6IjFmZTEwN2YyYzkyODM2ZDZkNzRmNWI5ZDBmOWY4ZWI0YmQ1ZDQ2MDIiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886627_d19bc5ff70_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>After the war he studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Krakow<\/strong>, obtaining his degree as an architectural engineer in 1952. While he was studying this degree, <strong>he married Zofia Helena Stankiewicz, with whom he had one son, Tomasz<\/strong>, who ended up being a well-known radio announcer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54998075200_c2a0558700_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5ODA3NTIwMCwiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTA5NSwicyI6IjE0OWE4OGFlNWI2NTUyYjNmMGYxMjUyOGU4MzJjODE3NGJjMjJmNjMiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54998075200_8acd722e81_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Initially, Beksi\u0144ski worked as a designer for the bus company Autosan in Sanok<\/strong>, his hometown, where he distinguished himself with highly original creations for bus bodies, decorations, and logos. However, <strong>his designs were so innovative that none of them went into production<\/strong>. In September 1977, he moved with his family to Warsaw.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773581_a71d584e24_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Nzc3MzU4MSwiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTExNCwicyI6ImZlY2JlZGJhMjU3NmY0Y2IwM2QyMDQyYzE3YjVkMTZkY2MyODIxMDAiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773581_a42400e080_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beksi\u0144ski began his experience in the art world as a draftsman. Later, in the late 1950s, he experimented with photography<\/strong>, creating somewhat disconcerting montages, such as his famous self-portrait of 1956. <strong>He finally opted for painting as the best medium to unleash his powerful imagination.<\/strong> It was this artistic modality that ultimately made him famous.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773591_51cd3d4787_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Nzc3MzU5MSwiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTEzMSwicyI6ImIzMzU2OWM2Y2RhZjUxOGFmNGFkYjljNWJkODk0YzQyMzZlYjAwMjIiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773591_28d16c0429_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is said that Beksi\u0144ski could not stand silence and always painted while listening to classical music<\/strong>. The genre he usually chose for those moments was Neo-Romanticism, whose most famous representative is the renowned Polish musician Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chopin. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beksinskiarchiwum.net\/archiwum1\/publistyka_medialna_dotyczaca_beksinskiego\/teksty_napisane_o_beksinskim_w_ jezykach_obcych\/english\/cz_1_archiwum_publicystyka_medialna._zdzislaw_beksinskis_passion_for_music_artykul_guest_profile.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Sanok Historical Museum preserves more than 1,500 Beksi\u0144ski CDs<\/a>, including works by Chopin, Liszt, Grieg, Dvorak, Bruckner, Shostakovich and G\u00f3recki. Apparently, <strong>his favorite musicians were the Czech neo-romantic Gustav Mahler and especially the Soviet-German Alfred Schnittke<\/strong>, a composer of Jewish origin, who converted to Christianity at the end of his life and had a very varied style and notable mystical influences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886692_c69f98a2cd_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Njg4NjY5MiwiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTIwNywicyI6ImJlY2Y4MjE5OGRlYTYwM2UxNzBkNTI3MjRkNzM4M2VlMjY1MGVjNWMiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886692_0f7f7f8c8d_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Zdzis\u0142aw Beksi\u0144ski never explained the meaning of his perplexing works<\/strong>, which he never titled, and about which he stated: <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsilon.org.pl\/moje-sny-czasem-spotykaja-sie-ze-snami-beksinskiego\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>\"Ja nic nie chce powiedzie\u0107, ani niczego przekazywa\u0107. Maluj\u0119 to, co przychodzi mi do g\u0142owy\"<\/a><\/em> (<strong>I don't want to say or convey anything. I paint what comes to mind<\/strong>). He dedicated himself to painting fantastical motifs, with paintings that seemed marked by the terrible experience Poland endured in the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886697_b834405d29_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Njg4NjY5NywiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTIyOCwicyI6ImMzNzI0ZmVjOWRlMmU5MGJhMzFlMTE3MWQ3ODQxNzhkZjk2MTQ3MDciLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886697_48b8420405_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ypsilon.org.pl\/moje-sny-czasem-spotykaja-sie-ze-snami-beksinskiego\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">On one occasion he simply said: <em>\"Pragn\u0119 malowa\u0107 tak, jakbym fotografowa\u0142 sny\"<\/em><\/a> (<strong>I want to paint as if I were photographing dreams<\/strong>). It is one of the very few explanations he was willing to give about his work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997945993_bc450c7438_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Nzk0NTk5MywiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTI0NCwicyI6ImE0MGRkYzEwY2QwZDczZTM4ZjIwY2QzNzE3YjNjMjU5MDk5N2EyNmEiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997945993_5a439b2377_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>However, what Beksi\u0144ski painted looked more like nightmares.<\/strong> His works depict monstrous figures, tortured-looking beings, and landscapes from <strong>a fantasy world closer to Mordor than Lothl\u00f3rien<\/strong>, though even Sauron's orcs would have been terrified by some of this Polish artist's creations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54998032524_e94861e2af_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5ODAzMjUyNCwiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTI2MCwicyI6IjkwNzk1ZTQxOTcwYzM0ZDBmNDk5NWRmZTcwODI3ZGRhNmE5N2Q0MzYiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54998032524_b66b331942_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beksi\u0144ski broke all ties with any known artistic style, and in the 1990s he simply described his painting style with one word: \"barokowy\" (baroque).<\/strong> A word perhaps appropriate to define a highly detailed, figurative visual style that <strong>is quite reminiscent of the work of the Swiss artist Hans Rudi Giger<\/strong>, as seen in the American films of the \"Alien\" series.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773661_4549e43d9f_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Nzc3MzY2MSwiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTI3NiwicyI6IjAxMzYxMzFjMDcwNjRjMWE4ZWQzY2FhOGNlYzQxOGU5ZDgyMmJlMmYiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773661_cc5e7db245_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>His final years were as heartbreaking as his work.<\/strong> His wife, Zofia, died of an aortic aneurysm on September 22, 1998. His son, Tomasz, committed suicide the following year, on December 24, 1999, Christmas Eve, with a drug overdose. Beksi\u0144ski was the one who discovered his son's body.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886582_3aef022f41_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Njg4NjU4MiwiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTI5NCwicyI6ImI2OWQ0M2EyMWQ3ZTYyNTdlYzcxYzk3MGRhNzRiZTMxYThjNmIzMTMiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886582_233d9a621e_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some say that because of this Beksi\u0144ski's work was \"cursed\"<\/strong>, but the reality is that he had already been painting grotesque pictures for several decades, despite which he was always a man of good humor and affable manner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773636_48b8420405_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Nzc3MzYzNiwiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTMxMSwicyI6IjhkMmIzOTJlZmNlZWU0ODI2MjA4M2VjMmM3OGM2NDM3YTdiZGM4NDIiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54997773636_0e4b86dbe6_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beksi\u0144ski's life came to a violent end just days before his 76th birthday.<\/strong> On the night of February 21-22, 2005, he was stabbed to death in his Warsaw apartment. Robert Kupiec, 19, the son of a man who had cared for Beksi\u0144ski for years, was convicted of the murder, allegedly because the painter refused to lend him money.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886567_753eeea789_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjo1NDk5Njg4NjU2NywiZSI6MTc2NjM0OTMyOCwicyI6ImY2OWIyMzQwMTQ0ZWY5ZWIzYTk2NmFhNTljMTAwMTY1OGZjYjhhYjAiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54996886567_6986fd8ee6_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Today, several dozen of his works can be seen in museums across Poland<\/strong>, such as the Sanok Historical Museum (to which the artist bequeathed most of his work in his will), the Cz\u0119stochowa Municipal Art Gallery, the National Museum in Wroc\u0142aw, the Nowa Huta Cultural Center in Krak\u00f3w, and even the Museum of the Archdiocese of Warsaw. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beksinskiarchiwum.net\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Since 2023, his work has also been available on the website Archiwum promocji sztuki Z.
