The maneuver backfired spectacularly on Guardiola and her party: the PP only gained one more seat, failing to secure an absolute majority, but lost more than 9,000 votes. This additional seat was gained due to lower voter turnout, not through any merit of their own.

Vox has achieved the biggest success of this election day, increasing its seats from 5 to 11 and gaining almost 40,000 votes compared to the elections two years ago. Therefore, these elections have strengthened Vox's negotiating position, leaving the PP and Guardiola in a worse position than before. The PP cannot boast of being great strategists.

The other major success of the day goes to a far-left coalition formed by Podemos, United Left (the electoral brand of the Communist Party of Spain), and the Green Alliance (AV), an eco-left party founded in 2021 within the Unidas Podemos coalition. This coalition increased its representation from 4 seats to 7, picking up some pieces of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party), but demonstrating its inability to mobilize the majority of left-wing voters at a particularly low point for that part of the political spectrum, due to its corruption and sexual harassment scandals.

The PSOE was the big loser of the night. For decades, the Socialist Party governed the region with an absolute majority. Yesterday, for the first time, it was defeated by the PP in Extremadura, losing 10 seats and 108,000 votes. Now, within the Socialist ranks, they are pointing to candidate Miguel Ángel Gallardo as responsible for the fiasco. After all, he is facing charges for the irregular hiring of Pedro Sánchez's brother when Gallardo was president of the Badajoz Provincial Council. However, the real culprit for this disaster, according to the Socialists, is Pedro Sánchez.

Gallardo was the PSOE candidate in these elections because Sánchez wanted him to be. The socialist leader perhaps thought it was a good idea to sacrifice his party in Extremadura, a sacrifice surely aimed at waving the "far-right" scarecrow in the next general election. Like a desperate castaway, Sánchez is sinking his party in the hope of staying afloat, believing that remaining in La Moncloa Palace until 2027 will give him a better chance of re-forming the "Frankenstein coalition" with communists and separatists, with which he achieved re-election in 2023 after losing the general election that year.

However, Sánchez will find it very difficult to renew that coalition with a PSOE devastated at the regional level, with the socialist federations sacrificed for the personal benefit of their leaders. Yesterday's elections will probably serve to fuel internal dissent within the party against Sánchez, because many socialists are already realizing that in two years, when their leader has to leave La Moncloa and perhaps retires to a comfortable life in the Dominican Republic, the PSOE will be so broken that at best it will only be able to compete with Vox for second place.

That's why I've chosen that title for this analysis of yesterday's elections. Even if unintentionally, Pedro Sánchez is doing Spain a huge favor: destroying the PSOE, a disastrous party that has done immense damage to our country, degrading the rule of law, attacking judicial independence, undermining our fundamental rights, and implementing an aberrant ideological agenda.

The only consolation for the PSOE is that it already has another party ready to take over the defense of progressive dogmas: the PP, whose current leaders seem determined to be a clone of the PSOE. María Guardiola is a clear example of this: a blue socialist. We'll see what she does now to remain at the head of the Junta of Extremadura, because if she didn't want Vox's broth, now she'll have to swallow two cups.

---

Photo: PSOE.

Don’t worry, you haven’t made a mistake and this isn’t the TVE website or the socialist rag El Plural, but things have to be acknowledged.

[10398
25975,2333,1062,19280,23441,641,693,2721,7841,7535
post-62527","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-spain","tag-alianza-verde","tag-extremadura","tag-izquierda-unida","tag-maria-guardiola-martin","tag-miguel-angel-gallardo","tag-partido-popular","tag-psoe","tag-pedro-sanchez-castejon","tag-podemos","tag-vox
