{"id":62652,"date":"2026-01-01T18:24:42","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T17:24:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=62652"},"modified":"2026-01-03T09:53:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T08:53:38","slug":"invernia-a-piece-of-traditional-galician-music-ideal-for-cold-winter-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2026\/01\/01\/invernia-a-piece-of-traditional-galician-music-ideal-for-cold-winter-days\/","title":{"rendered":"'Invern\u00eda', a piece of traditional Galician music ideal for cold winter days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We're starting a new year and the first blog post of 2026 will be about music, the universal language par excellence.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/08\/30\/ines-a-beautiful-song-about-a-galician-woman-who-became-queen-of-portugal-after-her-death\/\">'In\u00e9s', a beautiful song about a Galician woman who became Queen of Portugal after her death<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/06\/29\/quena-festa-e-o-dia-a-song-from-medieval-spain-with-a-great-beginning\/\">'Quena f\u00e9sta e o d\u00eda', a song from medieval Spain with a great beginning<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1989, my favorite musical group, Milladoiro, released the album<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/milladoiro.gal\/es\/album-music\/castellum-honesti\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\"Castellum honesti\"<\/a> (The Castle of the Honest One), a name associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turismo.gal\/recurso\/-\/detalle\/6972\/torres-de-oeste?langId=es_ES&tp=9&ctre=40\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Western Towers of Catoira (Pontevedra)<\/a>, built in the 12th century by order of the first archbishop of Santiago de Compostela, Diego Gelm\u00edrez (1068-1140), to face the frequent Viking raids on the coasts of Galicia. It's a fine example of descriptive music that evokes the cold days of this time of year. <strong>Like the other tracks on the album, \"Invern\u00eda\" was recorded at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin<\/strong>, the capital of Ireland, under the direction of engineer Brian Masterson.<\/p>\n<p><em>\"<strong>The album charted in the United States that same year, an unprecedented feat<\/strong> at the time for an album with that theme,\"<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discmedi.com\/es\/disco\/5985\/milladoiro\/castellum-honesti\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">notes Discmedi<\/a>, the record company that released it. <strong>In 1989, Milladoiro performed for the first time in the USA<\/strong>, playing at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. <strong>You can listen to the studio version released in 1989 here:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Invern\u00eda\" width=\"665\" height=\"499\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/13O8JgLiVdM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>As a curiosity, if I remember correctly, it is the only Milladoiro song that includes the sound of a bell<\/strong>, towards the end of the piece, one more instrument from the wide array that this group uses in their pieces: Galician bagpipes, Irish bagpipes, bodhr\u00e1n, Celtic harp, Irish flute, hurdy-gurdy, transverse flute, clarinet, bouzouki, violin, acoustic guitar, ocarina, oboe and crumhorn, among others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/release\/8889863-Various-Celtic-Legacy-A-Global-Celtic-Journey?srsltid=AfmBOorx313Uplivfl3ZA9wVy7KQbtn3FtkbRbv-eut1HCKZkJDqMjvU\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In 1994, Narada Collection Series included this track on their album \"Celtic Legacy\"<\/a>, a compilation of Celtic music (then very fashionable), with \"Invern\u00eda\" being the only Galician track on the album.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5569\/14735378719_b7d7a3b5ed_o.jpg?s=eyJpIjoxNDczNTM3ODcxOSwiZSI6MTc2NzI5MDkzOCwicyI6IjY4MDdiNzY1MWQ4YmFkZDBjM2ZlN2MzYjVhZDA4MGIxY2I0MDcwNzQiLCJ2IjoxfQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/5569\/14735378719_41deb55fdd_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Besides its extensive and carefully crafted musical output, Milladoiro stands out for its large repertoire of instruments (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/14735378719\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elentir<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>In 1995, Milladoiro re-released this instrumental piece on their album \"As Fadas de Estra\u00f1o Nome,\"<\/strong> a double CD recorded during several live concerts on their tour of Argentina. <strong>It was Milladoiro's first live album, released in Japan by the Tokuma label and in the United States by Green Linnet<\/strong>, which gives an idea of \u200b\u200bthe significant international reach of this Spanish musical group. \"Invern\u00eda\" was the fourth track on their second album. <strong>You can listen to that live version here:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Invern\u00eda\" width=\"665\" height=\"499\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RMpes9TMFlA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>---<\/p>\n<p><small>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/4262813805\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elentir<\/a>.
