In the last few hours, there have been many reactions to the fall and capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/strong>. As expected, Russia and its allies have openly condemned the US intervention in Venezuela. In Europe, most governments have supported the US or have had a moderate reaction<\/strong>, either advocating for a peaceful transition in Venezuela but without explicitly supporting the capture, or adopting a more ambiguous position but without criticizing the United States. Many European governments have reiterated that Maduro was a dictator<\/strong>, a crucial fact for assessing yesterday's events.<\/p>\n

The European governments that have supported the United States or most clearly celebrated the fall of Maduro are the following<\/strong> (I include links to statements or news in each of the country names): Albania<\/a>, Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/a>, Estonia<\/a>, Finland<\/a>, France<\/a>, Greece<\/a>, Italy<\/a>, Kosovo<\/a>, North Macedonia<\/a> and Portugal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The governments that have advocated for a democratic and peaceful solution for Venezuela without supporting the US, but without criticizing or condemning its intervention<\/strong>, are the following: Austria<\/a>, Belgium<\/a>, Ireland<\/a>, Netherlands<\/a>, Ukraine<\/a> and Vatican City<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Governments that have adopted a more ambiguous or equidistant, but rather moderate, position<\/strong> have been those of Germany<\/a>, Croatia<\/a>, Cyprus<\/a>, Czech Republic<\/a>, Denmark<\/a>, Iceland<\/a>, Latvia<\/a>, Lithuania<\/a>, Norway<\/a>, Poland<\/a>, Romania<\/a>, Serbia<\/a>, Slovenia<\/a>, Sweden<\/a> and United Kingdom<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The only governments that have condemned the fall and capture of Maduro are those of<\/strong> Belarus<\/a> (a dictatorship headed by Alexander Lukashenko, which has \"categorically condemned\" the US operation to capture Maduro), Slovakia<\/a> (in a statement by its Prime Minister, Robert Fico, known for his pro-Russian positions), Spain<\/a> (Pedro S\u00e1nchez has \"strongly\" condemned the operation in a letter<\/a> published by his party's website, the PSOE) and Russia<\/a> (through a statement in which it condemned the intervention and reaffirmed its support for the Venezuelan dictatorship).<\/p>\n

It is no surprise to see S\u00e1nchez's government sharing a position with dictators like Putin and Lukashenko<\/strong>. The current Spanish government is the only executive in the European Union with communists in its cabinet. In fact, S\u00e1nchez's communist partners have been openly supporting the Nicol\u00e1s Maduro dictatorship<\/a>, just as they do with other like-minded dictatorships such as China and Cuba.<\/p>\n
