{"id":62943,"date":"2022-01-18T23:34:54","date_gmt":"2022-01-18T22:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=62943"},"modified":"2026-01-18T00:16:54","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T23:16:54","slug":"qaanaaqs-is18-infrasound-station-listening-to-explosions-from-greenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/01\/18\/qaanaaqs-is18-infrasound-station-listening-to-explosions-from-greenland\/","title":{"rendered":"Qaanaaq's IS18 Infrasound Station: Listening to explosions from Greenland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The town of Qaanaaq, in northern Greenland, is surely one of the coldest, most desolate, and inhospitable places in the world.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/01\/10\/kola-a-report-explains-what-the-ussr-found-in-the-worlds-deepest-borehole\/\">Kola: a report explains what the USSR found in the world's deepest borehole<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/10\/22\/a-tour-of-the-cincinnati-subway-an-entire-subway-network-abandoned-since-1928\/\">A tour of the Cincinnati Subway: an entire subway network abandoned since 1928<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>Its origin is related to the construction of the US air base at Thule, located 97 kilometers to the south.<\/strong> When it was built in 1953, the original inhabitants of the towns of Thule, Pituffik and Dundas, located near the base, were relocated to a new town, which was named <strong>Qaanaaq, which is one of the northernmost towns in the world<\/strong>, and also the northernmost of all those that have a palindrome as a toponym (that is, that can be read the same forwards or backwards).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51829352314_c19943d0a4_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Located north of the Arctic Circle, <strong>Qaanaaq experiences four months of darkness for its 646 inhabitants<\/strong>. The highest average temperatures occur in June at only 20\u00b0C, while the lowest average temperatures are recorded in February at -58\u00b0C. Communication is primarily by air, as land routes are limited to unpaved tracks. Interestingly, <strong>Qaanaaq has more Husky dogs than human inhabitants<\/strong>, as these animals are essential for traversing its snowy landscapes by sled.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51829734225_47cf0e7844_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2000, this desolate place was chosen by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) to install the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctbto.org\/verification-regime\/featured-stations\/types\/infrasound\/is18-qaanaaq-greenland-denmark\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">IS18 Infrasound Station<\/a>, <strong>the northernmost station of the International Monitoring System (IMS)<\/strong>, covering an area of \u200b\u200bseveral thousand kilometers in radius. From that desolate location, <strong>the IS18 microbarometers are operating 24 hours a day to monitor the Earth for evidence of explosions, primarily in the atmosphere<\/strong>, and transmit data to the International Data Centre (IDC) in Vienna, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctbto.org\/verification-regime\/featured-stations\/types\/infrasound\/is18-qaanaaq-greenland-denmark\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the CTBTO points out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51829733215_c1f52cabc0_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This facility is managed by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). <strong>Qaanaaq<\/strong> was chosen for this station for several reasons: <em>\"the village is still inhabited; there is good infrastructure with commercial power available<\/strong>; and wind speeds are comparatively lower than in other locations.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51829124078_c4bc0089c8_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The IS18 features an eight-element infrasonic array divided into two sub-arrays<\/strong> equipped with wind noise reduction systems and a central processing facility (CPF). Both IS18 and the village of Qaanaaq are located near the coast. <strong>Denmark also operates another IMS station, the AS27 auxiliary seismic station, at Sondre Stromfjord, Greenland<\/strong>, about 1,500 km south of IS18.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51829010816_8482da1813_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; margin:10px 0 10px 0;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Currently, this facility <strong>operates 24\/7, 365 days a year to detect nuclear explosions that violate the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty<\/strong>.
