The aircraft and its crew were interned until the end of the war. <strong>The aircraft was transferred to Barajas Airport, Madrid, on October 8, 1943<\/strong>, by its own crew and under the supervision of Spanish military personnel, following an agreement with the United States Embassy, \u200b\u200baccording to the blog <a href=\"https:\/\/incidentessgm.blogspot.com\/2013\/11\/consolidated-pby-5a-catalina.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Incidentes a\u00e9reos en Espa\u00f1a en la SGM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55049463092_22d2b033a3_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55049463092_bc4191c075_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The PBY-5A BuNo 08122 with Spanish roundels (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/museodelaireydelespacio\/posts\/puesta-en-vuelo-del-catalina-dr1-1-\u00fanico-en-nuestro-ej\u00e9rcito-del-aire-el-13-de-m\/1127533046078769\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Museo de Aeron\u00e1utica y Astron\u00e1utica<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>After the war, once its crew was repatriated, the aircraft remained in Spain<\/strong>, as did other Allied aircraft that had entered Spanish territory, after being purchased from the US by the government of General Franco. <strong>In 1949, the then Minister of the Air Force, General Eduardo Gonz\u00e1lez Gallarza, ordered that the PBY-5A to be put into service with the Spanish Air Force.<\/strong> After a reconstruction in Getafe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/museodelaireydelespacio\/posts\/puesta-en-vuelo-del-catalina-dr1-1-\u00fanico-en-nuestro-ejercito-del-aire-el-13-de-m\/1127533046078769\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the PBY-5A flew again on May 13, 1951<\/a>, this time with Spanish roundels and piloted by Lieutenant Colonel Pombo Somoza and Commander Machuca. <strong>The aircraft received the military registration DR.1-1<\/strong>, initially displaying the number 66-1 and later 74-21.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The DR.1-1 began its service at the Matac\u00e1n Higher Flying School<\/strong> in the province of Salamanca, despite being the only aircraft of its type operated by Spain. <strong>Later, it was assigned to the 51st Seaplane Regiment in Pollensa<\/strong>, on the island of Mallorca, although due to its condition it spent most of its time at Son San Juan Airport. <strong>In December 1954, the aircraft suffered an accident during takeoff<\/strong>, after which it was withdrawn from service and subsequently scrapped.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55049453492_44a1ec10ea_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55049453492_2d64a29378_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The PBY-5A BuNo 46596 at the Cuatro Vientos Air Museum, in a photo taken on April 20, 2011, showing its appearance at the time (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/55049453492\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elentir<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>At the Cuatro Vientos Air Museum there is a PBY-5A preserved with the DR.1-1 livery<\/strong>, but it is obviously not the original aircraft. It is an aircraft built for the US Navy in 1944 with the BuNo 46596. <strong>After the war it was acquired by the Mexican Air Force<\/strong>, which operated it briefly, before it passed through the hands of various civilian operators in the United States, Australia, and Canada. <strong>In 1967 it received the tail fin of a PBY-6A<\/strong>, which is why it is often mistakenly identified as that variant.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55050622769_2cd3615fe2_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55050622769_3fd3766fae_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The PBY-5A BuNo 46596 at the Cuatro Vientos Air Museum in a photo taken on October 13, 2019 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Consolidated_PBY-5A_Catalina_%E2%80%984_-_74-21%E2%80%99_(25847927183).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u5148\u5f93\u9697\u59cb<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>After a turbulent history, primarily as a firefighting aircraft, BuNo 46596 arrived in Spain in 1992<\/strong>, briefly serving in firefighting operations with the company Servicios Aereos Espa\u00f1oles (SAESA) in the Canary Islands, with the civil registrations EC-314 and EC-693, and <a href=\"https:\/\/abpic.co.uk\/pictures\/operator\/Icona\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flying with emblems of ICONA<\/a> (National Institute for Nature Conservation). <strong>The aircraft finally ended up at the Air Museum in 1996.<\/strong> The initial livery was applied a few years later during a restoration process.
