A few months ago I already mentioned here that Segovia is one of my favorite places in Spain<\/a>, and I highlighted a specific detail.<\/p>\n

\nA little-known detail of the battlements of one of the largest castles in Galicia<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n

That detail is the Alc\u00e1zar of Segovia, a splendid castle of medieval origin that was the palace of the Kings of Castile<\/strong>. Its origins date back to 1120, although it is believed that a Roman fortification may have previously stood on the site. Inside, there is a Throne Room<\/strong> with the coat of arms used by the Catholic Monarchs, Elisabeth I of Castile (1451-1504) and Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452-1516).<\/p>\n

The Spanish Habsburg monarchs made little use of this palace<\/strong>, which ended up being used as a prison for nobles in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1762, King Charles III ordered the creation of the Royal Artillery College within this fortress<\/strong>, the predecessor of the current Artillery Academy of the Spanish Army. The Alc\u00e1zar served this purpose until 1862, when a terrible fire left it severely damaged.<\/p>\n

Following its reconstruction, the General Military Archive of the Spanish Army was installed in the Alc\u00e1zar in 1898<\/strong>, a location it maintains to this day. In addition to its military use, this beautiful palace has also served as a museum since the 1950s, administered by the Patronato del Alc\u00e1zar de Segovia (Board of Trustees of the Alc\u00e1zar of Segovia), an entity founded in 1951. In 1985, this castle and the entire old city of Segovia were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/strong> As you can see from the photos above (taken by me in 2010 and 2012, respectively), it is an impressive fortress both day and night.<\/p>\n

The Alc\u00e1zar of Segovia is one of the most beautiful castles in Spain<\/strong>, with its conical slate roofs commissioned by King Philip II (1527-1598), following the fashion of the time in many European castles. The snow makes this historic building, with its fairytale castle appearance, seem even more magical.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A few days ago, the TurismoSegovia Twitter account published<\/a> these photos which you can see here.<\/a> They show us some images of the snowfall that occurred in the middle of this month in the city of Segovia.<\/p>\n

On January 17, the Twitter account of the Royal Alc\u00e1zar of Segovia posted this splendid video of the castle covered in snow<\/a>, commenting: \"The Royal Alc\u00e1zar of Segovia today, under the snow falling on Segovia, shows an image that further enhances its beauty and brings us closer to how it was contemplated, winter after winter, by kings, soldiers, and travelers throughout its almost thousand-year history<\/strong>.\"<\/em><\/p>\n
