An opinion based primarily on statements by Pérez. Of course, I'm not going to tell anyone who to vote for. Everyone has their own way of thinking and certain criteria and priorities when deciding who to entrust with their vote. What I am very clear about is what I would do according to my principles.

First of all, let me start from a premise. I am not, nor have I ever been, affiliated with either of those two parties. Since its founding, I have voted for Vox because it is the party that most closely aligns with my principles, but as I have said many times, my vote is not unconditional: it depends on what each party stands for at any given time.

A review of the electoral programs of Vox and SALF

Focusing on the topic at hand in this article, the defense of the culture of life, and setting aside other important issues, a review of the positions of SALF and Vox yields two very different results. To begin with, it should be noted that Vox has existed for 12 years; it is a party with a certain track record and has already had the opportunity to demonstrate whether its principles align with its actions. SALF ran for the first time in the 2024 European elections. Therefore, we have had much less time to verify the consistency of each.

SALF ran in the 2024 European elections without presenting any program. I would never have voted for a candidacy under these conditions, because it seems like giving them a blank check. Vox presented a program whose sixth point stated:

We will put an end to the progressive policies imposed from Brussels on all of Europe
Europe must remember its roots and values. Our money is being used to fund a progressive agenda that attacks freedom, pits families against each other, floods Europe with multiculturalism, and particularly criminalizes our rural communities. The European Commission must do less, do better, and abandon ideological impositions to start focusing on people's real needs. We will defend the Right to Life and respect for the family as the fundamental institution of society.

Vox's program, currently available on its website is more explicit on these issues. Chapter 20 is titled "Human Dignity" and begins with these two points:

360. We will defend the right to life from conception to natural death and we will end the culture of death. To do this, we will begin by repealing the Euthanasia Law and the Law on free abortion.

361. We will eliminate the false "right to abortion" and defend the right of every pregnant woman to access a permanent information protocol where healthcare professionals provide her with all the necessary support for the maintenance, education, and care of her children. The protocol will include the pregnant mother's access to specific psychosocial care through a clinical psychologist, as well as the opportunity to listen to the fetal heartbeat and undergo a 4D ultrasound.

Among other measures, Vox's program also includes eliminating "public aid to those organizations that promote practices contrary to the promotion of life from conception" (363), abolishing the PSOE's gag law against pro-lifers (366), and guaranteeing "the exercise of the right to conscientious objection by medical or administrative personnel who, due to their functions, are related to practices contrary to the right to life."

What both parties are saying ahead of the elections in Aragon

Some people may wonder (and it's perfectly legitimate to do so) whether Vox currently upholds these principles. I wanted to verify this myself. Vox's program for the February 8th elections to the Cortes of Aragon can be read here (PDF). This program includes three points regarding the defense of the right to life against abortion. They are as follows:

151. We will defend life from conception to natural death, promoting information and providing help to mothers who need it.

152. We will offer pregnant women comprehensive advice and support, including financial, emotional, psychological and medical support, especially for all those mothers facing a problematic or unexpected pregnancy.

153. We will guarantee the free exercise of the right to conscientious objection for all healthcare professionals, doctors, nurses and pharmacists, protecting this freedom in all cases against those who seek to criminalize and restrict healthcare workers by requiring them to be included on a list of objectors.

SALF has indeed published a program for these elections (PDF). The text mentions abortion at one point on page 8, which states the following:

Baby Bonus and Maternity Support: We will reinstate the Baby Bonus for every birth or adoption in Aragon (for example: €2,500 per child, extendable to €3,500 for the third and subsequent children). We will also provide special support to young mothers or those in difficult circumstances so they can carry their pregnancies to term safely: no pregnant woman will be alone or forced into abortion for financial reasons. Life and family will always be at the heart of our policies.

A personal assessment of what both parties are saying

Personally, I find Vox much more explicit on this issue than SALF, if we go by what they both put in writing. Vox talks about defending life from conception to natural death, about repealing abortion and euthanasia laws, and about defending conscientious objection, while SALF's program says nothing about that. But there's another matter. A few days ago I already pointed out here what happened in December 2024, when SALF had three MEPs. In response to an initiative openly presented in the European Parliament calling for the recognition of abortion as a fundamental right in the European Union, SALF MEPs Sara Junco and Diego Solier voted in favor of this pro-abortion initiative, while Alvise Pérez abstained. As I mentioned several days ago, the SALF leader offered no explanation for this. Pérez ended up distancing himself from Junco and Solier a few months later, in April 2025, but not because they supported abortion, but because they supported the European rearmament plan in the face of the threat of Russian expansionism.

I voted for Vox in those elections. If even one Vox MEP had voted in favor of that pro-abortion text and, moreover, the party hadn't offered any explanation or disavowed that MEP, Vox, for me, would have been finished as a pro-life party and as a voting option. In fact, I wouldn't be able to believe anything that party said again, because if a political organization were capable of betraying its commitment to the culture of life like that, I wouldn't expect even a shred of consistency on other issues.

SALF may try to hide behind the fact that it ran in those elections without a program, but Alvise Pérez was very explicit in 2022 when speaking about abortion on his Telegram channel: "Those of you who justify the murder of a baby have been absolutely manipulated and absorbed by a murderous ideology." However, when two SALF MEPs voted in favor of recognizing abortion as a fundamental right in the EU, Alvise Pérez said nothing. From that moment on, anything SALF says about abortion seems like empty words to me.

---

Photo: Hollie Santos / Unsplash.com.

Lately I’ve been seeing a certain debate on social media about two political parties and the culture of life in Spain.

[10732
10430,13789,10739,22088,7535
post-63176","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-life","tag-abortion","tag-alvise-perez","tag-euthanasia","tag-se-acabo-la-fiesta-salf","tag-vox
