{"id":63190,"date":"2026-01-31T11:55:25","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T10:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=63190"},"modified":"2026-02-08T23:10:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T22:10:29","slug":"the-farewell-of-the-5th-squadron-of-the-spanish-navy-equipped-with-sh-60f-seahawk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2026\/01\/31\/the-farewell-of-the-5th-squadron-of-the-spanish-navy-equipped-with-sh-60f-seahawk\/","title":{"rendered":"The farewell of the 5th Squadron of the Spanish Navy, equipped with SH-60F Seahawk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This Friday, January 30, the Spanish Navy said goodbye to another of the historic units of its Air Fleet (FLOAN).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/04\/20\/mh-60r-seahawk-this-is-the-new-multi-mission-helicopter-that-the-spanish-navy-will-receive\/\">MH-60R Seahawk: this is the new multi-mission helicopter that the Spanish Navy will receive<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/08\/11\/the-last-sh-3-sea-kings-of-the-spanish-navy-leave-on-a-ship-for-peru\/\">The last SH-3 Sea Kings of the Spanish Navy leave on a ship for Peru<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Armada_esp\/status\/2017345550161477924\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Spanish Navy announced yesterday the disbandment of the 5th Squadron<\/a>, in a ceremony held at its hangar at the Rota Naval Base in C\u00e1diz. <strong>The unit was about to celebrate its 60th anniversary<\/strong>, having been created in February 1966 with an initial complement of 94 men. <strong>Between 1966 and 1981, the 5th Squadron received 18 SH-3D Sea King helicopters<\/strong>, popularly known in the Spanish Navy as \"Morsa\" (Walrus) after the unit's radio call sign.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52323165072_480dd903dc_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/52323165072_eff92bc293_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">An SH-3D Sea King from the 5th Squadron at the Rota Naval Base in January 1977, with the beautiful navy blue livery that these helicopters sported at the time (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/nara.getarchive.net\/media\/a-right-side-view-of-a-spanish-navy-sh-3d-sea-king-helicopter-parked-on-the-c64460\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NARA<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Initially, the 5th Squadron was dedicated to anti-submarine warfare (ASW).<\/strong> In 2001, it began converting its helicopters to acquire a new tactical transport mission, transferring the anti-submarine warfare responsibility to the 10th Squadron, created on December 22, 1988, and equipped with SH-60B Seahawk helicopters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4283\/34258720764_b199152611_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/4283\/34258720764_d4136b6fe4_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">An SH-3D Sea King from the 5th Squadron aboard the aircraft carrier \"Juan Carlos I\" during a visit to Vigo on June 3, 2017 (Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/elentir\/34258720764\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elentir<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>In 2017, the 5th Squadron began receiving second-hand SH-60F Seahawk helicopters purchased from the United States<\/strong>, bringing its total to eight. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2022\/06\/28\/adios-al-morsa-el-ultimo-vuelo-de-los-sh-3-sea-king-de-la-armada-espanola\/\">In June 2022, the unit retired its last SH-3Ds<\/a>, closing a long chapter in its history.
