Now, this type of weaponry could take another leap forward. Yesterday, <strong>Lockheed Martin released an interesting video showcasing the Lamprey MMAUV<\/strong>, which the American company describes as a \"multi-mission autonomous undersea vehicle\" that is part of <em>\"<strong>a new class of smart, stealthy, do-it-all submersibles built to disrupt and deny enemy forces at sea<\/strong>.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Introducing LampreyMMAUV\u2122: The Next-Generation of Undersea Autonomy\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3y0RAwJlAxs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Both the video and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/products\/mmauv.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Lockheed Martin website<\/a> offer little information about the characteristics of this underwater drone. <strong>There is no information about its size, speed, or range.<\/strong> This is to be expected given the nature of this type of weapon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55088111142_35784331e6_o.png\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55088111142_6a3e27d753_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lockheed Martin has indeed indicated that the <strong>Lamprey will have a 24-cubic-foot (7.6 cubic meter) cargo bay capable of carrying torpedoes (above) and decoys (below).<\/strong> Despite its stealthy nature, it seems Lockheed Martin has decided to make a clear nod to Beatles fans, since <strong>the released images depict the Lamprey as a yellow submarine<\/strong>. I bet a lot of hippies won't find that funny, hehe...<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089261434_f3a889a017_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089261434_e245915605_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the most interesting aspects of the video is that <strong>the Lamprey is designed to stalk its targets from the seabed<\/strong>, making it a virtually undetectable weapon. Lockheed Martin has indicated that <strong>one of its functions is to be a \"watchful eye in the depths.\"<\/strong> <em>\"Lurk stealthily underwater, collecting vital intelligence to relay to friendly forces.\"<\/em> But its missions extend beyond reconnaissance and intelligence gathering.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089365135_84916d1727_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089365135_bff1735a2d_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/en-us\/products\/mmauv.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lockheed Martin also notes that the Lamprey can be used as an aerial drone launcher<\/a>: <em>\"When equipped with optional launch tubes, <strong>maneuver into contested areas to launch short-range surveillance or strike UAVs<\/strong>, giving friendly forces new options for monitoring and denying threats.\"<\/em> <strong>Unmanned aerial vehicles used in attack missions are already a considerable problem for warships.<\/strong> Having a stealthy submarine launching them from close range will be an even greater problem.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089204638_1aaeea4865_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089204638_8b44a3345a_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, <strong>Lockheed Martin also indicates that the Lamprey can be used to deploy disruptive decoys<\/strong>, making the enemy believe that an allied vessel is sailing where it is not. <em>\"<strong>Confuse and disrupt enemy sensors, creating virtual decoys to draw adversaries off-target.<\/strong>\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55088997371_5a1f9bc9ba_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55088997371_2aa33129de_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lockheedmartin.com\/content\/dam\/lockheed-martin\/rms\/documents\/mmauv\/Lamprey-MMAUV.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lockheed Martin has published a very brief PDF dossier on the Lamprey<\/a>, offering some additional details. Specifically, it notes that this underwater drone would have <em>\"<strong>Next-gen Mission Autonomy: Follows complex commands and operates in teams<\/strong>,\"<\/em> similar to the wolfpacks of German U-boats in World War II, but without a crew. It also states that it will be <em>\"<strong>Easy to upgrade, load out, and maintain:<\/strong> Access to all major systems in minutes.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089365175_d34f2507c7_3k.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089365175_992fa6b59a_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The dossier also indicates something else we see in the video: \"<em><strong>Innovative docking to ships or subs: Moves with the fleet and stays mission-ready<\/strong>.\"<\/em> In the video, we see a Lamprey docking to the hull of an allied submarine, taking the opportunity to deploy a hydrogenerator and recharge. Thus, <strong>this unmanned submarine would have electric motors<\/strong>. Furthermore, this PDF dossier reveals another detail: <strong>the Lamprey could carry up to six aerial drone launchers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089204643_421da23d0d_o.png\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55089204643_21b6321544_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Lamprey could be a submersible capable of revolutionizing naval warfare<\/strong>, but it should be noted that it is not the first underwater vehicle of this type presented by an American company. <strong>In April 2025, Anduril Industries presented Copperhead<\/strong>, a family of autonomous underwater vehicles for military purposes. The presentation video is very similar to that of the Lamprey.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Command the Sea.
