One of the elements for determining the good health of a democracy is the existence of clear limits to the action of political power.<\/p>\n

If you claim to defend your country but reject freedom, then you do not defend your country<\/a><\/rel>
\nThe bold voice that many people believed to be until the moment of truth arrived<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n

Yesterday we had a good example of this: the United States Supreme Court struck down a large part of the tariffs established by Donald Trump<\/strong>, through a ruling (which can be read here<\/a>) that recalls that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, invoked by Trump to establish these tariffs, does not authorize the President to impose them, as they are the responsibility of Congress.<\/p>\n

On Truth Social, Trump has lashed out furiously at the court<\/a>: \"The Supreme Court\u2019s Ruling on TARIFFS is deeply disappointing! I am ashamed of certain Members of the Court for not having the Courage to do what is right for our Country<\/strong>.\"<\/em><\/p>\n

As is his custom, Trump did not stop there and insulted the judges who voted in favor of the ruling, including Chief Justice John Roberts<\/strong> (a conservative Catholic nominated by Republican George W. Bush), saying that they are \"a Disgrace to our Nation,\" calling them \"just FOOLS<\/strong> and \u201cLAPDOGS<\/strong>\u201d for the RINOS and Radical Left Democrats and, not that this should have anything to do with it, very unpatriotic<\/strong>, and disloyal to the Constitution<\/strong>.\"<\/em><\/p>\n

To be honest, the shame for a nation is not having an independent judiciary and democratic checks and balances<\/strong> that curb potential abuses of political power and denounce violations of the law by a government. The shamelessness lies in rejecting those checks and balances and attacking the judiciary when it doesn't side with the government<\/strong>, staging a tantrum like the one Trump threw yesterday. An attitude, by the way, that is very reminiscent of the attacks by the socialist Pedro S\u00e1nchez against the Spanish judiciary<\/strong> for investigating the alleged corruption cases affecting his personal circle, his government, and his party.<\/p>\n

What is unpatriotic and disloyal to the Constitution of a democratic country is not to respect the separation of powers<\/strong>, as rulers like those mentioned do, perhaps in the belief that their wishes should take the place of the laws and that anyone who contradicts them automatically becomes an enemy to be defeated.<\/p>\n

I care little if a ruler invokes ideas more or less similar to my own to despise these checks and balances:<\/strong> any politician who believes he has the right to disregard the Constitution and the laws and who attacks the Justice system when it contradicts him is something that should be a cause for alarm for all citizens, whatever their ideas may be<\/strong>, and a cause for alarm that is especially serious the more power that politician holds.<\/p>\n

History has already shown us the terrible consequences of a politician believing they are always right and refusing to accept contradictions<\/strong>, even those established by the Constitution they themselves pledged to respect upon taking office. Trump and S\u00e1nchez do not preside over a private estate where they can do as they please: they govern in democratic countries.<\/strong> If they are unwilling to accept the limits of their power, then they should resign.<\/p>\n
