{"id":63622,"date":"2026-02-23T23:49:04","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T22:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=63622"},"modified":"2026-03-01T22:27:31","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T21:27:31","slug":"the-bhela-i-and-the-ec-665-tiger-had-e-attack-helicopters-of-the-spanish-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2026\/02\/23\/the-bhela-i-and-the-ec-665-tiger-had-e-attack-helicopters-of-the-spanish-army\/","title":{"rendered":"The BHELA I and the EC-665 Tiger HAD-E attack helicopters of the Spanish Army"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Army's Airmobile Forces (FAMET) have an attack helicopter unit based in Almagro (Ciudad Real).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/12\/18\/spain-buys-100-military-helicopters-from-airbus-including-50-h145ms-for-the-famet\/\">Spain buys 100 military helicopters from Airbus, including 50 H145Ms for the FAMET<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/10\/18\/the-equipment-carried-by-a-pilot-of-an-ec-665-tiger-attack-helicopter-of-the-spanish-army\/\">The equipment carried by a pilot of an EC-665 Tiger attack helicopter of the Spanish Army<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>The 1st Attack Helicopter Battalion (BHELA I) began operations in 1979<\/strong>, eventually operating a total of 45 MBB B\u00f6-105 helicopters by 1983, flying armed versions of a multi-purpose helicopter also used in the civilian market. <strong>In 2003, Spain acquired new attack helicopters for the FAMET:<\/strong> the EC-665 Tiger, an aircraft specifically designed for attack missions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55111798242_5039a08cac_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55111798242_05dff06d9b_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The first three EC-665 Tiger HAP (Support and Protection Helicopter) helicopters arrived in 2007.<\/strong> They were equipped with a 30mm cannon, 68mm SNEB unguided rockets, and Mistral air-to-air missiles. <strong>The BHELA I received a total of six EC-665 Tiger HAP helicopters<\/strong>, all manufactured in Marignane, France. They have now been retired from service and are being used for the development of the Tiger Mk III and for obtaining spare parts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55112884183_dbf96efbd2_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55112884183_02b0cbf451_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2013, BHELA I began receiving the EC-665 Tiger HAD-E (Attack and Destruction Helicopter)<\/strong>, a version with more powerful engines, more armor, Spike ER air-to-surface missile launchers, and 70mm rocket launchers. <strong>BHELA I received 18 Tiger HAD-E helicopters<\/strong>, all of them manufactured at the Airbus Helicopters facilities in Albacete.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55111798227_bf3d2a59b1_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55111798227_62549ff57f_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The EC-665 Tiger has two crew members: a pilot and a gunner.<\/strong> This model has an unusual seating arrangement for attack helicopters, with the gunner sitting in the rear (offering better visibility) and the pilot in the front.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2021\/10\/18\/the-equipment-carried-by-a-pilot-of-an-ec-665-tiger-attack-helicopter-of-the-spanish-army\/\"> The crew of the Spanish EC-665 Tiger uses Thales TopOw helmets<\/a>, high-tech devices that integrate night vision.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55113068690_64a426926e_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55113068690_a7fe1c339d_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The EC-665 Tiger carries its 30mm GIAT 30 cannon in the lower part of the nose, and the rest of its weapons on two wing-like structures<\/strong> located on either side of the fuselage. In addition to the aforementioned armament, these wing-like structures allow for the carrying of two external fuel tanks, extending the aircraft's range, as <strong>the EC-665 Tiger lacks in-flight refueling probes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55111798247_880fe60a6f_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55111798247_6bbc1297f9_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The EC-665 Tiger can reach a maximum speed of 315 km\/h.<\/strong> It has a service ceiling of 4,000 meters. Its combat range (armed) is 800 km, reaching 1,300 km using external fuel tanks. <strong>It is a very maneuverable helicopter<\/strong>, as all of us who have seen it in a demonstration have already witnessed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55112680671_c6693f7724_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55112680671_b11ff975fe_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spain plans to modernize its 18 EC-665 Tiger HAD-E helicopters to the Mk III version<\/strong>, a process scheduled to begin before 2030. Today, the Spanish Ministry of Defense <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensa.gob.es\/gabinete\/notasPrensa\/2026\/02\/DGC-260223-visita-batallon-helicopteros-almagro.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has indicated<\/a> that through this modernization program, <strong>the Spanish Tigers will be able to interact with drones and expand their secure satellite communications.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55113068630_deb1827ef5_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55113068630_8bb6c37831_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Defense has also indicated that <strong>BHELA I<\/strong> will also be reinforced by the new Airbus H145M helicopters.
