Growing tensions between the Spanish and US governments have created some uncertainty about their joint military bases.<\/p>\n

Currently, the Spanish and U.S. Armed Forces jointly operate Mor\u00f3n Air Base<\/strong>, in the province of Seville, and Rota Naval Station<\/strong>, in the province of C\u00e1diz. At the beginning of this month, the government of Pedro S\u00e1nchez vetoed the use of both bases for Operation Epic Fury<\/a>, the U.S. military intervention against the Islamist dictatorship of Iran. The Spanish Socialist leader also strongly criticized that intervention. As a result, the Iranian regime praised S\u00e1nchez<\/a> and even put his picture on missiles launched against US and Israeli targets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

A few weeks ago, the far-left party Podemos, a parliamentary ally of S\u00e1nchez, called for the closure of American bases in Spain<\/a>. A few days later, and amid tensions between the two governments, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham called for US forces to leave those Spanish bases<\/a>, relocating to another country that would allow the United States to use its bases.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

It is unlikely that the United States would seriously consider abandoning Rota and Mor\u00f3n.<\/strong> Spain holds a strategic position as a gateway to the Mediterranean, and these two bases are ideally located as a logistics hub for the U.S. Navy's Sixth Fleet, in the case of Rota, and as a stopover between the Azores and the Middle East for the U.S. Air Force (USAF). The investment required to create a new naval base would be substantial<\/strong>, and the United States would be hard-pressed to find a better location than Rota, especially given the services offered by this Spanish city.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The United States Navy seems oblivious to these controversies.<\/strong> Its activity not only continues at both Spanish bases but it also continues to improve its infrastructure at the aforementioned naval base. Today, the U.S. Navy (USN) announced the opening of a new maintenance building at Camp Mitchell<\/a>, a USN facility in the southeastern part of Naval Base Rota.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

A detachment from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 1<\/strong>, deployed under the 22nd Naval Construction Regiment (NCR, the famous \"Seabees\" of the USN), took over this part of that Spanish base in 2021, after a seven-month deployment to Kuwait<\/strong>, in response to the increase in US Navy operations in Europe and Africa. Following the arrival of its Seabees in Rota, the U.S. Navy awarded the construction project for the new Expeditionary Maintenance Facility at Camp Mitchell in December 2021<\/a> for $25.9 million<\/strong>. The facility is scheduled to become fully operational in December 2025, replacing older, outdated buildings.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The new building was constructed through a project led by the Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) of NAVSTA Rota<\/strong> in coordination with the 22nd Naval Construction Regiment (NCR). The U.S. Navy has stated that this new facility \"delivers modern vehicle, boat, and equipment maintenance capabilities<\/strong> in direct support of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion and Underwater Construction Team assets operating across Europe and Africa.\"<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\"This facility is about readiness at the deckplate level<\/strong>,\"<\/em> stated Captain Allen Willey, Commodore of 22NCR. \"By providing our Seabees and divers with a purpose-built maintenance space, we\u2019re directly improving their ability to sustain equipment, respond faster, and remain mission-ready<\/strong> in support of fleet and combatant commander requirements.\"<\/em><\/p>\n

The new building, designated an Expeditionary Maintenance Facility (EMF), includes maintenance bays for vehicles and boats<\/strong>, administrative spaces, and support areas tailored to the operational needs of the Seabees and U.S. Navy divers deployed on the front lines. \"The project also involved demolition of obsolete facilities<\/strong> and renovations to nearby buildings to accommodate displaced operations,\"<\/em> the USN notes.<\/p>\n
