Sometimes it seems that the defense policy of Pedro S\u00e1nchez's government is designed or at least inspired from Rabat or Moscow.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, the new Minister of Finance, Arcadi Espa\u00f1a, stated<\/a>: \"Either defense and weapons or butter, food, and the welfare state.<\/strong> And now that they want to impose defense spending on us, we must always demand to know where we should allocate our resources.\"<\/em><\/p>\n To begin, it's important to remember that the Spanish government assumed NATO's common commitment to invest 5% of its GDP in defense<\/a>. Last year, the Atlantic Alliance already made it clear that S\u00e1nchez lied<\/strong> he said an exception would be made for Spain<\/a>. Despite this, and within the context of his party, the PSOE's, constant shift towards the far left, S\u00e1nchez continues to create tensions within NATO to appease his partners most aligned with Russia<\/a>. His partners and his most radical voters, who despise the Atlantic Alliance.<\/p>\n Moreover, amidst the greatest threat to peace that Europe has faced since the Cold War, to say that we will buy butter instead of weapons is like mocking our allies<\/strong>, who are increasingly dedicating resources to defending their integrity against Putin's expansionism, especially the countries bordering Russia. The S\u00e1nchez government is like the freeloading neighbor who refuses to contribute to the building's expenses<\/strong>, while simultaneously enjoying what the other neighbors are paying for. Obviously, our allies are not idiots: if Spain does not contribute to European defense like the others, the day we need help, we will not receive it<\/strong> \u2014a very dangerous situation, given that we have a neighbor to the south like Morocco, which intends to seize our territories in North Africa.<\/p>\n In addition to all of the above, why do politicians who make these kinds of demagogic statements about defense spending never give up having bodyguards?<\/strong> If their decisions are putting our entire country at risk of the terrible consequences of underinvesting in defense, jeopardizing our national security and the security of our allies under the belief that threats affecting others don't affect us<\/strong>, and openly suggesting that we should spend on butter what others spend on security, why not spend on butter what the Spanish government's bodyguards cost?<\/strong> Is it acceptable to risk the security of Spain, but the security of its ministers is untouchable?<\/p>\n ---<\/p>\n
