(...) There was no confrontation. Everything unfolded very courteously. In fact, as I already showed here yesterday, those restrictions mean that the Western Wall, a holy site for Judaism, is empty. On March 16, Israel's Home Front Command issued guidelines stating: "Gathering can be held with up to 50 people in a place from which a standard protected space can be reached within the time available to reach shelter." The holy sites of Jews, Muslims, and Christians are closed because there are no shelters in or around these historic sites.

The patriarch also omitted the fact that the police had denied his request to access the Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Furthermore, yesterday afternoon, the Israeli Police clarified that they informed the Latin Patriarch that his request to access the church had not been approved for safety reasons, the same reasons Jews cannot access the Western Wall or Muslims the Al-Aqsa Mosque. "The patriarch’s request was reviewed yesterday, and it was clarified that it could not be approved for the reasons outlined above," the Israeli Police stated. Therefore, this is not a random incident. When the Latin patriarch went to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre yesterday, he knew he was doing so ignoring the police communication, but the Catholic prelate did not mention this in his harsh statement yesterday morning either.

A week ago the patriarch assured that he was “in constant dialogue with the competent authorities”

Furthermore, on March 23, Cardinal Pizzaballa issued a statement in which he affirmed: "The restrictions imposed by the conflict and the events of recent days do not bode well for any imminent improvement. In constant dialogue with the competent authorities, together with the other Christian Churches, we are evaluating how, in the ways to be agreed upon, we can celebrate the central Mystery of our salvation in the heart of our Churches. The situation is constantly evolving, and it is not possible to provide definitive indications for the days to come; we will therefore be forced to coordinate on a day-to-day basis.".

The statement added that ""it is already clear, however, that ordinary celebrations open to all cannot take place", and continued: ""The Chrism Mass is postponed to a date to be determined, as soon as the situation allows, possibly within the Easter season. The Dicastery for Divine Worship has already granted the necessary approval." The Holy See News Service noted that this Mass was usually celebrated at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The obvious question is: if the patriarch acknowledged a week ago that he was coordinating with the authorities, why did he decide yesterday to ignore the police's instructions? This sparked an international controversy that was exacerbated by the information he himself chose to omit from the statement that ignited this wave of indignation among many Catholics.

I repeat what I said yesterday: I am Catholic and what I expect from my pastors is that they tell the truth, the whole truth, and not half-truths that lead the faithful into confusion. In this case, confusion on a global scale, which is even worse.

Israel is criticized for this incident, but not Russia for attacking a monastery.

Furthermore, it is necessary to point out that none of the aforementioned politicians issued a similar complaint about the Russian attack last Tuesday on a Catholic monastery in Ukraine, nor did other politicians, organizations, and activists who protested against Israel yesterday. Why is there a global outcry over yesterday's events but not over this Russian attack? What kind of defense of Catholics is it that cries out against Israel for a misunderstanding but not against Russia for an attack that caused a fire in a monastery?

---

Photo: Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Yesterday I explained here what happened in Jerusalem in relation to a matter that has acquired a worldwide impact.

[10712
10424,24269,10573,12864,10905,24479,2721,26583,7786
post-64237","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-religion-eng","tag-catholic-church","tag-church-of-the-holy-sepulchre-in-jerusalem","tag-emmanuel-macron","tag-giorgia-meloni","tag-jerusalem","tag-karol-nawrocki","tag-pedro-sanchez-castejon","tag-pierbattista-pizzaballa","tag-viktor-orban
