Sometimes these toys are given to them by their children, and other times they are the result of a very thorough search for the ideal candidate to perform <strong>a very specific function during the launch of spacecraft.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197590663_7bea12e458_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197590663_d14859be08_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A few days ago, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2026\/04\/01\/the-live-broadcast-of-the-launch-of-nasas-artemis-ii-mission-to-the-moon\/\">the article I published about the launch of the Artemis II mission<\/a>, I pointed out here that <strong>this flight carries a crew of four:<\/strong> NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen. <strong>I must say that I unforgivably omitted an important crew member: little Rise.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197708194_4266b8d139_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197708194_ee8aff8ee2_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/general\/moonmascot\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rise was born after a contest launched by NASA to choose a ZGI for the Artemis II mission<\/a>. <strong>A ZGI is a zero gravity indicator<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/general\/moonmascot\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA explains the function of these toys as follows<\/a>: <em>\"Zero gravity indicators are small, plush items carried aboard spacecraft to provide a visual indication of when the spacecraft and its crew reach space.\"<\/em> <strong>On the Artemis I mission, which carried no human crew<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/well-traveled-beagle\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the only astronaut on board was a small Snoopy plush toy<\/a>. As you may recall, that was also the name chosen by NASA for the Lunar Module LM-4 of the Apollo 10 mission, launched on May 18, 1969. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2024\/02\/02\/in-search-of-snoopy-the-lunar-module-of-the-apollo-10-mission-that-was-lost-in-space\/\">LM-4 Snoopy has been lost in space for 57 years<\/a>, as you could already read here in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197590658_a0dc6402ba_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197590658_a0dc6402ba_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The competition to select a ZGI for Artemis II lasted approximately three months and received thousands of proposals from more than 50 countries.<\/strong> On August 22, 2025, NASA announced 25 finalists from 10 countries: the United States, Canada, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Peru, Singapore, and Wales.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197446046_c53c6fb9eb_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197446046_516349635b_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The winning entry was submitted by Lucas Ye, a boy from Mountain View, California<\/strong>, who was inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/apollo-8-earthrise\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a famous photograph titled \"Earthrise,\"<\/a> taken by NASA astronaut Bill Anders on the Apollo 8 mission on December 24, 1968, Christmas Eve, in which the photographer flew alongside Frank Borman and Jim Lovell. <strong>It is an inspiring image<\/strong> that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/100photographsth0000unse\/page\/n5\/mode\/2up\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was listed in 2003 by Life magazine as one of the 100 photographs that changed the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197850440_4076cd9c1b_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55197850440_3cb20ef5ac_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The final version of Rise was developed by the Thermal Blanket Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center<\/strong>, located in Greenbelt, Maryland.
