Patriotism is a very noble sentiment, but for a long time some have been trying to manipulate it for despicable purposes.<\/p>\n

The anti-Western propaganda that is poisoning a segment of the right-wing<\/a><\/rel>
\nIf you claim to defend your country but reject freedom, then you do not defend your country<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n

One of these aims is to promote hatred of Jews, one of the most toxic prejudices and one that has inspired countless crimes in the history of humankind<\/strong>. Crimes that include genocide, the Holocaust, in which six million Jews were victims of an extermination promoted by rabid anti-Semites who used patriotism as a pretext<\/strong> to justify the most horrendous atrocities in recorded human history.<\/p>\n

With that colossal massacre, whose images shocked humanity in 1945, anti-Semites were not satisfied and have not ceased promoting the hatred that fueled those crimes<\/strong>. For decades, that hatred has been concentrated especially on the world's only Jewish state. No country has the number and intensity of haters against it that Israel suffers.<\/strong> A hatred that today is pervasive and is especially active on the far left, the far right, and within Islamic extremism. One of the disguises used to conceal that hatred is, once again, patriotism.<\/strong> And in saying this, I adhere to the definitions of anti-Semitism of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These definitions include acts such as accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel than to the interests of their own countries, denying Jews their right to self-determination (i.e., denying the right of the State of Israel to exist)<\/strong>, and also applying a double standard by demanding behavior from Israel that is neither expected nor required of any other democratic country. Promoters of hatred toward Jews no longer even concern themselves with this last nuance: they direct criticisms against Israel that they don't even apply to dictatorships like Russia, Iran, China, or North Korea.<\/strong> This was very common among the far left and Islamism; now it is also common among the far right.<\/p>\n

In fact, antisemitism has become a powerful magnet for uniting extremists of both the left and the right.<\/strong> Both sides no longer even try to hide their support for terrorist regimes like Iran. The height of shamelessness is seeing these antisemites invoking patriotism against Israel<\/strong>, demanding pronouncements against that country for denouncing the hostility and slander of antisemitic governments like that of Pedro S\u00e1nchez, yet not uttering a single complaint about Putin's threats against the entire West<\/strong>, just as they never say a word about Russian atrocities against the Ukrainian people, a people who are displaying genuine patriotism<\/strong> in their defense against the invaders of their country.<\/p>\n

All of this is nothing new. Antisemitism is especially strong among anti-liberal, anti-democratic, and anti-Western positions.<\/strong> Antisemites never criticize Putin's threats because Russia is a dictatorship that promotes hatred of the West. Now they even defend communist China and Iran simply because they are allies of Russia.<\/strong> Patriotism is used by these people as a mere disguise to conceal a geopolitical alignment with the worst of humanity.<\/p>\n

Obviously, the United States and Israel are not perfect countries<\/strong>, just as my country, Spain, and any other Western nation are not. But what is clear is that the United States and Israel are democratic countries, where political power is limited by clear checks and balances<\/strong>, where anyone can disagree with the government without being persecuted for it, and where there are rights and freedoms that protect people from abuses of power.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The United States has demonstrated its active commitment to defending freedom for years<\/strong>, and did so in the last century by making enormous sacrifices to defeat Nazism and the Japanese Empire. Israel is a state that has been harassed by its neighbors since its founding in 1948<\/strong>, and despite all the aggression it has suffered, it has been able to sign peace treaties with former enemies such as Egypt and Jordan, with whom it has never again had any conflict.<\/p>\n

I much prefer free countries like the United States and Israel to dictatorships like Russia, Iran, or China<\/strong>, and if there are false patriots who are scandalized by these words, it's because they actually want something just as unpatriotic for their own countries as those tyrannies that are oppressing Russians, Iranians, and Chinese. Someone who wants to plunge their country into a dictatorship is not a patriot: they are a totalitarian.<\/strong><\/p>\n
