For Jews, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Judah between the 11th century and 586 BCE. There stood the Temple that housed the Ark of the Covenant, where the Jewish people kept the tablets with the Ten Commandments written by God and brought back by Moses from Mount Sinai. For Christians, Jerusalem is important because it is the place where Christ was crucified and buried, and also the place where the pivotal event of his coming into the world took place: his resurrection. For Islam, it is its third most important city, after Mecca and Medina, as they consider it the site of the Prophet Muhammad's ascension to heaven.

The Hebrew name for Jerusalem (יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, Yerushalayim) literally means "House of Peace." Among the Jewish people, it is also known as Zion, after one of its hills, where the fortress captured by King David once stood. Arab Muslims know it as Al-Quds, meaning "The Holy One." The Spanish (Jerusalén) and English (Jerusalem) names both derive from the Latin version of the city's name, Hierusalem.

Telling the very long history of this city here would take many articles.
