That is why allied countries are increasing their defense spending in order <strong>to improve their military capabilities in the face of a possible Russian aggression against one or more NATO countries<\/strong>. Aviation would play a very important role in such a scenario, as <strong>allied air forces would face the challenge of achieving air superiority in the event of war<\/strong>, a task that is anything but easy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55264037411_0fd9fed070_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55264037411_89b9824650_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Eurofighter Typhoon of the 14th Wing of the Spanish Air Force (Photo: NATO).<\/div>\n<p><strong>In military circles, air superiority refers to the control of airspace<\/strong>, enabling friendly forces to operate by land, sea, and air without being threatened by enemy aircraft. A few days ago, <strong>NATO released a video explaining the types of aircraft it uses to achieve this air superiority<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NATO Air Power Explained: AWACS, Wild Weasels &amp; Air Superiority\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Dt4fbP3BjXA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One of the most important types of aircraft for achieving air superiority are <strong>the Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems (AWACS)<\/strong>, essentially flying radars that can detect enemy aircraft even at low altitudes. <strong>NATO currently has a fleet of 14 E-3A Sentry AWACS aircraft<\/strong> (pictured below), operated by the NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Force (NAEW&C Force). Three years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/10\/06\/an-airman-shows-the-interior-of-the-e-3-sentry-the-sophisticated-radar-aircraft-operated-by-nato\/\">I wrote about these aircraft here<\/a>; they are based in Geilenkirchen, Germany.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55263134492_b20219e1bb_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55263134492_dda08317e0_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A NATO E-3A Sentry AWACS in its hangar (Photo: NATO).<\/div>\n<p><strong>In addition to AWACS, the allied countries contribute a large fleet of more than 2,700 combat aircraft<\/strong>.
