Many Spanish media outlets seem to have discovered in the last few hours that there is a war between two countries called Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n
The silence of many Spanish media outlets regarding a brutal Russian attack on Kyiv<\/big><\/p>\n As you may have read here a few days ago, between Wednesday, May 13th and Thursday, May 14th, Russia launched a massive attack against civilian targets in Ukraine, killing 24 people, including 3 children<\/a>. Many Spaniards probably didn't hear about it because in Spain many media outlets said absolutely nothing about this attack<\/strong>, as I denounced here on Friday<\/a>. Things change when it comes to a counterattack against the invaders. As you could read here yesterday, this past weekend Ukraine responded with a massive drone attack against Russia and occupied Crimea<\/a>, hitting military and strategic targets in several locations, some of them in the Moscow region.<\/p>\n And here's the shocking part: many Spanish media outlets that didn't report on that bloody Russian attack against civilian targets in Kyiv<\/strong>, as if the lives of 24 Ukrainians (including 3 children) didn't matter that much, curiously did report yesterday on the Ukrainian counterattack and the deaths it caused.<\/strong> It's as blatant as if the media of the last century had concealed the brutal German bombings of Warsaw, Antwerp, and London, but then reported on the Allied counterattacks against targets in Germany. That's not reporting: it's a blatant bias in favor of the invading country.<\/strong><\/p>\n Efe concealed the Russian attack and omitted its victims, but reported on the Ukrainian counterattack<\/big><\/p>\n Especially serious is the case of two Spanish media outlets that are state-owned and funded by taxpayers. The EFE news agency reported yesterday on the Ukrainian counterattack against Moscow<\/a>, stating that there were casualties in the Russian capital<\/strong>. Although Pedro S\u00e1nchez's government boasts of standing with Ukraine (despite the fact that Spain remains one of the European countries that imports the most Russian gas<\/a>, for a much larger amount than Spanish military aid to the Ukrainians), this week EFE did not headline any of its news stories about the brutal Russian attack that killed 24 people in Kyiv<\/a>.<\/p>\n On May 15, the second day of the Russian attack and after the final death toll had been released, EFE chose to report on a new prisoner exchange by Russia<\/a>, dedicating the first four paragraphs of its article to information provided by Russian sources. In that same article, EFE also gave credence to Russia's accusation that Ukraine killed four civilians<\/strong> during a Ukrainian attack on an oil refinery in Ryazan, in western Russia. EFE dedicated the last four paragraphs of its 18-paragraph article to the Russian attack on Kyiv, but without mentioning the 24 deaths it caused.<\/strong> It's as if the news story had been written by the Kremlin. Most of the text was dedicated to redistributing content from Russian sources.<\/strong><\/p>\n RTVE did the same as Efe<\/big><\/p>\n Something similar has happened with public television, which is controlled by the S\u00e1nchez government. Yesterday, RTVE reported on the Ukrainian counterattack, stating three deaths in its headline<\/a>. The first six paragraphs of the report focused on Russian sources<\/strong>, leaving the last three paragraphs for information from Ukrainian sources. RTVE didn't even explain that this attack was motivated by a Russian attack launched two days earlier.<\/strong> The reason for this omission is easy to understand.<\/p>\n Like EFE, and unlike what it did yesterday with the Ukrainian counterattack on Moscow, RTVE did not publish any headlines on its website about the Russian attack on Kyiv that killed 24 people<\/a>. The television network, controlled by the coalition government of socialists and communists (the latter having opposed sending any military aid to Ukraine), hid the information about the Russian attack at the end of a news story about a prisoner exchange<\/a> \u2014the same thing the EFE news agency did. RTVE dedicated only 2 out of 12 paragraphs to that Russian attack.<\/strong> Unlike EFE, the public broadcaster stated: \"One of the missiles hit an apartment building in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, killing at least 24 people.\"<\/em> Curiously, RTVE dedicated a headline to 3 deaths in Moscow but not to 24 deaths (including 3 children) in Kyiv a few days earlier.<\/strong><\/p>\n It's the same thing that RTVE and Efe have been doing against Israel<\/big><\/p>\n This blatant bias in reporting is nothing new in the public media controlled by Pedro S\u00e1nchez: it's exactly the same thing that RTVE and Efe have been doing for years with Israel<\/strong>, omitting or hiding information about attacks by Palestinian terrorists from Hamas and Hezbollah against the Israeli civilian population, but then reporting on Israeli counterattacks. It cannot be interpreted as a coincidence that a government allied with communist China directs its media against Western allies.<\/strong><\/p>\n What we can expect the day S\u00e1nchez leaves government is that those responsible at RTVE and Efe will be held accountable, and that the question will be raised as to what need there is for two public media outlets whose sole purpose is to be propaganda organs at the service of the government<\/strong>. Both RTVE and Efe were created during Franco's dictatorship. Their mission then is the same as it is now. It is high time that Spain completed its transition to democracy by closing these two propaganda channels.<\/strong><\/p>\n ---<\/p>\n Photo: Efe.
