{"id":65339,"date":"2026-06-06T06:02:06","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T04:02:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=65339"},"modified":"2026-06-06T06:04:42","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T04:04:42","slug":"the-helicopter-and-the-training-of-the-gera-of-the-madrid-community-firefighters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2026\/06\/06\/the-helicopter-and-the-training-of-the-gera-of-the-madrid-community-firefighters\/","title":{"rendered":"The helicopter and the training of the GERA of the Madrid Community Firefighters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In December 1997, the Madrid Community Fire Department formed a group specializing in mountain rescues.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/01\/11\/the-spanish-firefighting-aircraft-of-the-43rd-group-seen-in-detail-inside-and-out\/\">The Spanish firefighting aircraft of the 43rd Group seen in detail inside and out<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2023\/02\/08\/a-firefighting-helicopter-to-the-rescue-of-a-burning-train-in-the-united-states\/\">A firefighting helicopter to the rescue of a burning train in the United States<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p><strong>Called the Special High-Altitude Rescue Group (GERA), this unit operates a Eurocopter AS-355N\/NP Ecureuil 2 helicopter<\/strong> (currently designated H125 by Airbus), the EC-NPV, belonging to the company <a href=\"https:\/\/skyhelicopteros.com\/flota\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Helicopteros<\/a>. This aircraft is based at the CERA facilities in Navacerrada. This Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@flybywire-aviation\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fly By Wire Aviation<\/a> (a YouTube channel I recommend you subscribe to) <strong>published an excellent report about this unit, its helicopter, and its training<\/strong>, in which we can see the missions that this unit carries out with this aircraft (the video is in Spanish; you can activate automatic English subtitles in the bottom bar of the player):<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"As\u00ed Entrena el GERA Reportaje Exclusivo\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lA3KGHDUMP4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The GERA was first based at the Collado Villalba Fire Station<\/strong>. Initially equipped with two vehicles at its inception, in 2002 the GERA acquired its first helicopter. <strong>This unit is available 24\/7, 365 days a year<\/strong>, and its only restriction on flying is daylight hours. Its helicopter provides it with excellent rapid response capabilities in the event of an accident.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55317168760_4ddae2c72c_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55317168760_1c8c3de1ef_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>In all these years the GERA has used different aircraft<\/strong>, among them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/emergenciases\/49858965187\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the A\u00e9rospatiale AS-350B3 Ecureuil EC-MQG<\/a> (on these lines) and <a href=\"https:\/\/aviation-safety.net\/wikibase\/386443\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the AS-355NP Ecureuil 2 EC-LCD, which on April 6, 2024 had an accident in La Maliciosa<\/a>, in the Sierra de Guadarrama, <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.elmundo.es\/madrid\/2024\/04\/08\/6613e784e85ece7e7a8b45a3.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after dropping off a GERA team for a rescue<\/a>. In the accident, the pilot was unharmed and the other occupant of the helicopter was injured. De los 4 ocupantes, a pesar de lo aparatoso del accidente, solo uno de ellos est\u00e1 lesionado y no reviste gravedad. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/z4vAM68YAX\">pic.twitter.com\/z4vAM68YAX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Aviaci\u00f3n Digital (@aviaciondigital) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/aviaciondigital\/status\/1777213850334421185?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 8, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>These accidents serve as a reminder of the risky work carried out by rescue units like GERA<\/strong>, in environments that are sometimes difficult to land in and in weather conditions that can be very adverse. <strong>The current GERA helicopter can carry its pilot and five other people<\/strong>, and in addition to high-mountain rescues, it can also be equipped with a Bambi Bucket to transport and drop water in firefighting missions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55316917548_95b4e0c6fc_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55316917548_a33a9aeab2_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The importance of these units is reflected in their statistics: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telemadrid.es\/programas\/madrid-directo\/Asi-se-prepara-el-GERA-para-sus-labores-de-rescate-2-2528767152--20230130093142.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">By October 2025, the GERA had already participated in more than 3,000 operations, providing assistance to almost 10,000 people<\/a>. This means that many people are alive today thanks to this firefighting unit.
