{"id":65390,"date":"2026-06-08T21:34:35","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T19:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/?p=65390"},"modified":"2026-06-08T21:40:39","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T19:40:39","slug":"the-problem-posed-by-the-cancellation-of-the-fcas-fighter-jet-for-the-spanish-navy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2026\/06\/08\/the-problem-posed-by-the-cancellation-of-the-fcas-fighter-jet-for-the-spanish-navy\/","title":{"rendered":"The problem posed by the cancellation of the FCAS fighter jet for the Spanish Navy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For some time now, reports and rumors about the possible cancellation of the FCAS have been occurring with increasing intensity.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/08\/27\/the-alternatives-spain-could-choose-if-the-sixth-generation-stealth-fighter-fcas-fails\/\">The alternatives Spain could choose if the sixth-generation stealth fighter FCAS fails<\/a><\/rel><br \/>\n<rel><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/07\/10\/a-disconcerting-statement-by-the-jemad-on-the-possible-purchase-of-the-f-35-by-spain\/\">A disconcerting statement by the JEMAD on the possible purchase of the F-35 by Spain<\/a><\/rel><\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/german-french-leaders-unable-resolve-fcas-fighter-jet-dispute-sources-say-2026-06-08\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the cancellation of this sixth-generation fighter jet program has been confirmed today by decision of the governments of Germany and France, the main countries involved in the project. <strong>Spain, the third partner, has been left as a mere spectator<\/strong> and now has to fend for itself in the face of the considerable problem that the end of this program represents for our Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51037204511_e68573ff12_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51037204511_10544faca1_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Artistic recreation of the German version of the FCAS (Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/esut.de\/en\/2020\/10\/fachbeitraege\/22981\/konzeptionelle-vorstellungen-zum-future-combat-air-system\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\">esut.de<\/a>).<\/div>\n<p>This news poses a serious problem for Spain. <strong>The FCAS was intended to replace the Spanish Air Force's Eurofighters<\/strong> when they reached the end of their operational life (something still expected around 2060; some of them, surely, we won't see by then). <strong>The Spanish Air Force still has quite some time before that day arrives<\/strong>, so it can wait patiently for new plans to emerge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54798397658_c483d6cb72_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54798397658_7bd7a53ae6_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">A Spanish Eurofighter from Wing 14 at Nellis AFB, Nevada, during exercise Red Flag 20-2 on March 10, 2020 (Photo: U.S. Air Force).<\/div>\n<p>Furthermore, <strong>the Spanish Armed Forces also expected the FCAS to fill the gap that will be left vacant by the retirement of the Navy's Harrier IIs in 2032<\/strong>. In July of last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2025\/07\/10\/a-disconcerting-statement-by-the-jemad-on-the-possible-purchase-of-the-f-35-by-spain\/\">Admiral General Teodoro Esteban L\u00f3pez Calder\u00f3n, Chief of the Defence Staff (JEMAD), stated<\/a> regarding the replacement of the Harrier II fighters of the 9th Squadron: <em>\"<strong>We will have to make do with the fourth generation we have and wait for the arrival of the FCAS someday.<\/strong> The problem is, of course, that we have to wait many years for the FCAS.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54906276441_a033910e9d_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54906276441_cd71c346a3_c.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Two Spanish Harrier II Plus aircraft on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier \"Juan Carlos I\" L-61 (Photo: Armada Espa\u00f1ola).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Thus, the Spanish Navy was counting on a future naval FCAS to replace the Harrier II<\/strong>, even if it was years after the end of its operational life (the FCAS wasn't expected until at least 2040). <strong>Now the future of Spain's carrier-based fixed-wing aircraft is uncertain, and not because there isn't an alternative\u2014there is.<\/strong> We all know it, although in certain political circles it's treated as taboo.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7813\/32988627098_3d20a87c0e_o.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/7813\/32988627098_3d20a87c0e_o.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The BAE Systems Tempest (Photo: Peter Nicholls \/ Reuters).<\/div>\n<p>With the FCAS program cancelled, Europe has another sixth-generation fighter alternative under development. <strong>The UK, Italy, Japan, and Sweden are currently developing the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), known as the BAE Systems Tempest<\/strong>, as the British company is leading the project. Development began in 2015 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eleconomista.es\/industria\/noticias\/13739531\/01\/26\/el-otro-caza-europeo-al-que-podia-aspirar-espana-empieza-a-acumular-sobrecostes-italia-ha-triplicado-el-gasto-previsto-del-tempest-en-cinco-anos.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is currently accumulating considerable cost overruns<\/a>. The problem for Spain is that <strong>there are currently no plans to build a naval Tempest<\/strong>.
