These Spanish Army positions included <strong>coastal artillery batteries, searchlight batteries to illuminate artillery fire, command posts<\/strong>, and other fortifications\u2014a defensive network known as the \"Muralla del Estrecho\" (Strait Wall).<\/p>\n<p>In their latest video, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@AventurasEntresierras\" target=\"_blank\">Aventuras Entresierras<\/a> (an excellent YouTube channel that I highly recommend you subscribe to) <strong>has done a mountain route starting in Huerta Grande<\/strong>, very close to El Pelayo, in the municipality of Algeciras (C\u00e1diz), <strong>following the Cerro del Tambor trail<\/strong>, which passes by some old positions of the Strait Wall (the video is in Spanish but has an English audio track; you can activate it in the bottom bar of the player):<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Recon El Tambor - Puesto de Mando Camuflado como Casa de Campo.\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4HL3f6StuHU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Below you can see some screenshots from this video, as a preview. We begin with <strong>the searchlight battery on Cerro del Tambor<\/strong>, a position originally intended to illuminate targets for coastal artillery. Today it has been converted into a beautiful panoramic viewpoint.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55361086526_8d3b8bf3f1_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55361086526_a54d437887_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Cerro del Tambor Wind Farm<\/strong>, located between Algeciras and Tarifa, is marked by a sign warning that it is military property and that access is prohibited, as it was built on land owned by the Ministry of Defense under a concession agreement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55361501985_907335cd3d_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55361501985_17269cd844_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The remains of an old artillery battery in Guadalmes\u00ed<\/strong>, in the municipality of Tarifa. As we can see in the video, the battery is abandoned and all the gun emplacements are disarmed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55361086531_8d3b8bf3f1_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55361086531_72ccf0c713_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Guadalmes\u00ed Tower<\/strong>, in the background, and the buildings that served as quarters for the troops of one of the batteries in the area. The aforementioned tower was built in 1588, during the reign of Philip II, to monitor the passage of ships through the Strait of Gibraltar.
