In the text of that decree, Aguinaldo ordered: <em>\"<strong>The individuals comprising the aforementioned forces shall not be considered prisoners, but rather friends<\/strong>, and consequently, the Captaincy General shall provide them with the necessary passes so that they may return to their country.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48156249052_27b1e1862c_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">The 'Last Ones of the Philippines' upon their return to Spain, in Barcelona, \u200b\u200bin September 1899.<\/div>\n<p>Thus culminated one of the most memorable feats in Spanish military history: 5<strong>5 Spanish soldiers and 3 friars resisted the attacks of Filipino insurgents for 337 days<\/strong>, between 1898 and 1899. Isolated from the outside world, the defenders of Baler were unaware that Spain had been defeated by the United States in the war that pitted the two countries against each other between April 25 and August 13, 1898, and which resulted in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines ceasing to be Spanish territories. <strong>The defenders of Baler left the Church of San Luis on June 7, 1899, and they did so with honor.<\/strong> In recognition of their courage, the Filipino insurgents allowed them to leave armed and in formation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"foto_piedefoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48156248977_7360915527_b.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto;\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"piedefoto\">Recreation of the film \"Los \u00faltimos de Filipinas\" (The Last Ones of the Philippines, 1945) of the departure of the Spanish from the Church of San Luis de Baler on June 7, 1899, after almost a year of siege.<\/div>\n<p><strong>Since 2007, the town of Baler has hosted an annual civil and military tribute to the last Spanish soldiers in the Philippines.<\/strong> This year, the event was held again, during which <strong>the Philippine town was filled with Spanish flags<\/strong> in remembrance of a shared past that lasted 333 years: from 1565, when Miguel L\u00f3pez de Legazpi established the first permanent Spanish settlement in the Philippines, until the Spanish defeat of 1898, when the country passed into the hands of the United States, under whose control it remained until 1946, with the exception of the Japanese military occupation during World War II. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BalerBirthPlaceofPhilippineSurfing\/posts\/pfbid02viaFVUR7w4EWmwjGUEQtX3EwZvjQRaEouzmu8NYNz75aVhY9bb89LjQJEV5xVdG2l\" target=\"_blank\">Last Sunday, the Baler Municipal Tourism Office posted these photos of the town<\/a>, decorated with Spanish and Philippine flags to celebrate Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55367024484_acac01d45f_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55367024484_98cba87c61_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55366976063_946ac36a9e_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55366976063_dce23b54fe_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55367240010_cc51d09d72_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55367240010_ca61be1503_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55367024479_7bb9b496c0_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55367024479_fc93dfaef7_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BalerBirthPlaceofPhilippineSurfing\/posts\/pfbid023sgaSGhjwPpf1cjFbT4Db4pth7mApoiE6J3RyXx3CGhKSpcHhbH6M1HDfXZsGSyyl\" target=\"_blank\">Events commemorating the combatants of the Siege of Baler began this Monday at Putok sa Dikaloyungan<\/a>, a small monument that remembers the Filipino revolutionaries who fought in that battle.
