Previously, <strong>the flagship of the Spanish Navy visited Naval Station (NAVSTA) Norfolk in Virginia<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outono.net\/elentir\/2019\/08\/22\/navsta-norfolk-a-reportage-on-the-worlds-largest-warship-base\/\">the world's largest naval base<\/a>. This Monday, the US Navy published a video on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/video\/1012307\/spanish-navy-multi-purpose-amphibious-assault-ship-juan-carlos-l61-virtual-tour\" target=\"_blank\">DVIDShub.net<\/a> showing the Spanish ship inside and out, footage recorded on June 21 at the aforementioned base:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"El portaaeronaves espa\u00f1ol &amp;apos;Juan Carlos I&amp;apos; en Norfolk, la mayor base naval del mundo\" width=\"665\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2YnFVeyYCMQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can see some screenshots from this video here. <strong>Norfolk is usually a very busy naval base.<\/strong> At 6 kilometers long, it has 14 piers and capacity to accommodate 75 ships.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55378109524_b35f03d706_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55378109524_0d69464bf1_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here we see the island of the \"Juan Carlos I\" next to the island of a US Wasp-class ship.<\/strong> The Wasp class currently consists of seven ships very similar to the Spanish aircraft carrier in configuration, but larger. <strong>Three Wasp-class ships are based in Norfolk:<\/strong> the USS Wasp (LHD-1), the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3), and the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55377930246_d7eee42198_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55377930246_52aabd3001_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The flight deck of the \"Juan Carlos I\"<\/strong> with its distinctive launch ramp, which allows the Harrier II Plus fighters embarked on this ship to take off with a greater weapons and fuel load. One is located on the starboard side forward of the ship's island, while the second is at the stern.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55378056513_ac460e38d5_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/55378056513_03bd582456_z.jpg\" style=\"width:100%; height:auto; border:0px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The ship's floodable dock.<\/strong> Like the American Wasp-class LHDs, the \"Juan Carlos I\" has a 975 m\u00b2 floodable dock that can simultaneously accommodate four LCM-1E landing craft and four Duarry Supercat fast boats. To starboard, we see the ship's island, from where the vessel is steered and from where air operations on the flight deck are also controlled. Interestingly, in this image, we see on the right the Mexican Navy's landing ship ARM Papaloapan (P-411) (formerly the USS Newport of the US Navy).
